Is the part about not being able to have sugar after your surgery a diet thing or will it affect your band and give you problems. I am asking because I went to the grocery store and bought what i thought was splenda. Come to find out it is a plenda blend. It has splenda and sugar in it. Can I use it? I do not want to go all the way back to the grocery store.

I don't think there is any reason to avoid sugar with your band any more than anyone should avoid it. It causes your blood sugar levels to fluctuate and make you feel hungry, but I didn't worry too much about sugar intake immediately after surgery when I was on Clear liquids only.

I wouldn't worry about using it until you have a chance to get back to the store and replace it. Not worth an emergency shopping trip.

I think that restriction applies to folks who have had bypass surgery, not the band. But, that being said sugar is not good, as it inhibits weight loss and sets up cravings for more sugar.

That was one of my first questions to the surgeon after op -- i like light mars bars, he said it is a calorie thing, dont waste calories on sweets - cakes, alcohol etc. You can lose faster with less calories and sugar foods are high calorie.

I use Splenda Brown Sugar Blend in moderate quantities and I'm fine but I do count it in my daily calories to keep me honest. Lap Band patients should NOT have any dumping or diarrhea or other unpleasant side effects from sugar like gastric bypass patients but nonetheless, too much sugar = less than desired weight loss. That's enough to keep me in check.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
