Hi Julie,

You will get conflicting answers on this even from health professionals. A bandster portion will vary depending on whether you are eating mushies or solids. Eating a 3 oz portion of meat, 1/2 cup of veggies and a little carb sounds just about right. But if you were eating chili, you might be able to eat more cause its part liquid, which goes right through the band. As far as eating 3 times a day, some docs feel that they want bandsters to avoid grazing, since that may be a reason why some of us are obese. The guideline is if you eat a meal as a bandster, it should keep you full for 3-4 hours before you are hungry. Its hard to tell if you have the right level of restriction if you are eating 6-7 times a day. And chances are if you are eating that many times, it will be smaller mini meals which may not fill you up. Of course, there are dieticians that might say that eating more frequently is better for your metabolism. Less highs and lows and your body is more efficient etc... I think that most banding docs and their dieticians would probably prefer that their patients stick to the three meal a day and a snack program. It works for me and thats all I know!!! LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
