I was banded on 4/7 and all is well. I have some business trips coming up at conferences all of which have been notoriously bad with food options. Any ideas? I can’t bring shakes and things on the plane (the flights are 6-7 hours) because they no longer allow liquids. (over 3oz anyway) Anyone delt with this or have ideas? There will likely only be fast food choices at the conference… not sure how to stay on track.

You can bring shakes in checked luggage, or make a Detour to a store once you're there. Also call the airlines and see if they would give you a medical exception for the carry-on, perhaps if you had doctor's note. Probably not, but worth asking. For travelling, Jerky, meat sticks like slim jims or similar cheese sticks, or the cheese/cracker snack packs if you do ok with crackers. Punch tuna with condiment mayo/relish/onion/whatever - instant tuna salad. Protein bars (you can carry these on). Cooked turkey pepperoni is one of my stand-bys, as 100 calorie snack packs are becoming. Applesauce cups. I've seen healthier snack alternatives at stores like carrot sticks and ranch or hummus and pita sticks instead of cheese & crackers. You can carry on fruit for domestic travel.

Even at the worst (foodwise) conference I can think of, which hands down has to be Las Vegas, there are still healthy choices like fruit, usually some kind of deli meat, vegetables, etc.

bring on Protein Powder and buy a carton of milk once through security, also once at your destination, go to a grocery to buy some staples for the conference then you won't have to worry about jelly donuts and the like:-)

Traveling can be a real challenge. I would look for Protein powder that doesn't need to be mixed with milk. Water is easier to find than skim milk sometimes. If your hotel has a continental Breakfast grab an extra banana or yogurt to eat at the conference. Those little individual servings of Peanut Butter are a good Protein source also. A few individual packages of nuts are also good to nibble on. String cheese is another staple for me when I travel.

Good luck and enjoy your travels.

I carry the following

about 10 scoops of protien powder

4 tubes of 3 ounces each liquid protien shots (from Bariatric Eating.com) in a ziplock bag

about 20 tubes of single use lipton ice tea mix

about 20 X 1 once beef jerkey strips

about 20 X 1 once wasabi peas

3-5 small cans of tuna with seasoning

this turns into maybe 10 Snacks and a half dozen meals for me over a trip. and I can get it all onto a plane.

my biggest problem is finding non-corbonated drinks, but that was solved by the ice tea packets.

if I have no option but fast food, I get a hamberger patty and eat that.

I have been in maybe 20-30 business meals since my surguery, maybe 3-4 times people have mentioned that I don't seem to be eating. most times I just push the food around my plate. one thing I have eaten a lot of is crab cakes, most nice resteraunts seem to have a variation of them, and they digest easily, and you can mash them and push them around and it looks like you ate it all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
