I know, I know. There are so many threads on this, but I need to vent. I have been on liquid diet since last Tuesday. Today I started with Clear Liquids. So, what all can be considered clear liquids? Can the Protein Shakes be one? I am hungry!!! I'm steady eating the popcicles and drinking Water. Can I heat a can of Soup and drain the contents? Please someone help! I am to be banded Friday. Thanks, D'

If this is the pre-op for shrinking the liver, choices usually include beef, chicken, vegetable broth, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, sugar free drinks (tea, crystal light, etc.) Draining the chunks from Soup will basically give you broth, so make it easy and just go that way. And make sure you're sugar free. Protein Shakes are technically a clear liquid, but their inclusion would be at your surgeon's discretion.

Your surgeon should have provided you with a list of acceptable things to have on the pre-op diet. Examples of what to eat. Request this from them going forward, especially post-op.

Try having some apple, cranberry, or white grape juice to boost your calorie and sugar intake. You will feel much better. You should not be eating only sugar-free items at this point, you are going to drop you blood sugar and not only feel terrible but be very hungry as well.

I would even get regular popsicles and Jell-O, those are not going to affect your liver and will give you an little boost to your hovering blood sugar level.

I've heard some docs put their patients on liquids for 2 weeks just to see if they can stick to it...is that the case for you or are you "liver-shrinking" (a ridiculous concept, IMO).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
