Does Protein Powder = Weight Gain

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I have a question for those of you using Protein Powder as a Meal Replacement for 1 meal a day.

I am getting my first adjustment in two years tommorrow and i know i wont be able to eat Breakfast because my band gets very tight in the mornings.

I have been looking through the many posts regarding Protein powder and their is so much debate about wether or not it helps lose weight or causes weight gain when you use it as a meal replacement for 1 meal a day.

So i was hoping that any of you who USE protein powder on a daily basis can share your experience with me as to wether it helps or hinders you, i would also like to know if you find it filling?

Thankyou in advance for anyone who can help me, im so confused and really dont want to use weight loss Meal Replacements.< /p>

I use Protein Shakes occasionally. As with anything else look at the nutritional info. Some are high calorie. Find one that is low calorie and low fat. I use Unjury and it has 80 calories and no fat.

I never really found a powder I cared for - and I tried a bunch. I will add a Protein Shake on the days I meet my trainer for extra Protein & in those instances EAS Low Carb (110 calories / 17grams of protein) chocolate / carmel latte are my choice.

This doesn't replace a meal for me, rather I treat is as a "snack" in my calorie count for the day. Since burning off over 700 calories in the trainer workouts; I actually need the extra calories & these taste like a latte or chocolate milk with an added bonus of protein.

Good Luck!!

thankyou for your responses,

i still have the question of is it filling and does it make an adequate substitute? I exercise at least 30mins heavy cardio, normally 1 hr a day but i want to make sure im not going to gain from too much Protein :-)

If you use it as a meal replacement, it wont cause weight gain, but its a pretty hefty snack, as is a Protein bar. Well the ones you can get in Australia anyway are. The Atkins prepacked ones are a couple of hundred calories each and many Protein Bars are over 300 calories, which by my way of thinking is way too much for a snack. That would cause weight loss to slow down.

But as a meal replacement, if it satisfies you (it wouldnt me), sure. Personally, I think they're lacking in green stuff, I'd prefer to include fruit and veg but each to their own.

i do eat my greens but im just too tight in the mornings and figure something is better then nothing, i have found one that is 103 calories a serve and has 20g Protein, for weight management.

Do you think this would be ok?

a 103 calorie proten shake in the am when your too tight to eat is perfectly fine & many do the same. most breakfasts (Cereal / oatmeal w/fruit) are higher in calories than that shake - i think it's good to at least get something in the AM to keep your metabolism moving.

I am looking for a Protein Shake with high Protein and low carbs. Does anyone know of anything like that? I am exercising 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day, 5 times a week. My Dr. told me to make sure to keep the protein high in order to build muscle. Right now he wants me to have 100 grams of protein a day. What has alot of protein??????

Thankyou everyone for taking the time to post, it has been very helpful. Im getting my fill in a couple of hours and will be picking up a Protein powder for my brekky. THANKYOU again

Julie, try going to a health food store, musashi make heavy Protein powders, they have one called p40 it is fairly cheap, a normal shake is 60g and 40g protein but they say that cutting that in half makes it a great weight loss shake. You shouldn't drink the full one because they say it is for bodybuilders half is fine :-)

Bel, How did your fill go? Thanks for your advice on Protein. I am going to a health food store to see what I can find with high protein and low carbs. What protein powder do you use? Do you use the P40 powder you told me about? I want one that tastes good too, if possible!!!

I have a Protein Shake for breakfast at least 3-4x a week usually. I am not a morning person and especially on work days it's either make a Protein shake and bring it to work for breakfast or don't eat breakfast at all (WHICH IS BAD!!). So I'd rather have my 200'ish calorie breakfast (90cal for cup of skim milk +100'ish for protein powder) instead of nothing.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
