Recommended Posts

I was banded Tues April 22. Four days ago. I jumped on the scale today and have gained 3 lbs. What's up with that. I'm following all of the rules. Hardly eating anything.:smile2:

I didn't but my dr warned me that it happens a lot. They said not to come home and get weighed after the surgery as a lot of people gain weight due to swelling and Water retention.

It's probably not actual weight so don't worry about it!

To get the ticker started click on hers and it should take you to the website.

Also, in between my pre-op appt. and my first fill, 4 weeks, I only lost 1 lb. I thought I had gained though. I had been eating everything under the sun. JUNK, JUNK, and more junk. The weight will start to come off.

Given that it takes 3,500 calories to add 1 pound of actual fat, its highly unlikely to be body fat weight. The scales are not your friend right now :-)

Best wishes on your journey.

Many of us gained just after surgery, with the most common time around 2 weeks post-op. I think it is a combination of several things:

1) some of the weight we lost in our pre-op and immediate post-op was just Fluid and the body eventually balances this out, causing a slight regain

2) the body does go into that starvation mode shock, when you drop the calorie level down as drastically as the post-op liquid diet dictates (I gained 3lb when I was averaging 4-500 cal a day!)

3) if you are eating a lot of canned Soup (very high sodium) or putting extra salt on your Soup to try to boost the flavour (like I did), you retain a LOT of extra Water, which is reflected in the scales.

For me, I lost 15lb in 15 days - 10 days pre-op, 5 days post-op, then gained and lost 3lb over and over again for the next 15 days. It was 20 days post-op (30 from starting to lose) before I dipped below the 15lb lost marker again, but since then it has been slow and steady.

Don't panic if this happens to you - it seems to be pretty normal for many people and will happen no matter what you do! Mind you, cutting out the salt did help to some extent.

I am so afraid that I will not lose weight. I know that I have put on a couple of pounds since my weight. I was swollen in the beginning but now I have just put it on. I have been trying so hard. My first fill is April 29, 2008l.

Hi:

I gained 9 pounds in 3 days post surgery. It was Fluid retention and it took about a week to ten days to get rid of it.

You'll probably pee it out in the next few days. Don't get discouraged.

Take care.

Sue

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
