Can't take any pain meds

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was banded on Wed 4/23rd, everything went quickly and I was in my room recovering by 1pm. I had a bad time with the pain meds making me nauseous and after trying several different types, I said forget it and just have been on Tylenol. The stuff you have to drink so they can xray you and make sure there are no leaks was pretty horrific and almost made me puke. Came home on the 24th and just took it easy. The pain from the surgery is not that bad but I get Migraines and for some reason had 3 in the last 2 days so I am dealing with that too. Feeling ok at this time and I am on stage 2 diet already as of today and had some thin Cream of Wheat, oh it tasted so good. Had about 10 baby spoon fulls and was full..... I don't want to get on the scale until I go to the Dr's on May 2nd for my post op. I am glad I did this and would do it again. Take care all.

Hi Yvonne, congrats on getting your band. That is odd that the pain meds make you nauseous. Are they liquid or pill form?

Yvonne-

Are your Migraines triggered by barometric pressure? I don't know where you live, but I'm in NJ and yesterday, I had a Migraine that lasted over 6hrs. I was able to tell without even checking that there was a storm moving through. Sure enough, we got rain last night. (Should've figured, since I got the car washed for the first time in about six months.)

Anyway, my normal protocol for migraines is 800mg of Advil, then 10mg of Maxalt-MLT. I also take 100mg of Topamax daily. Well, I couldn't take the Advil (I was just banded on Monday), and it kind of started the downward spiral. Lemme tell you, I was in tears and about ready to go to the ER.

I paged my surgeon twice before he finally called back (turns out he was in surgery), and I had already taken one Darvocet - I chopped it up and swallowed it, along with Reglan for nausea. I just wanted to get his go ahead for a second Darvocet. I honestly would've taken it even if he didn't call back. It was that bad. I still had to take a third one before I finally fell asleep around 1am.

Of course, it turned out to be a double whammy and my period showed up this morning.:smile2: Figures.

Have you asked your surgeon for meds for nausea? They really *do* help. Also, a lot of the time, it's the pain that can be adding to the nausea, too.

Hope you're feeling better. And congrats on the band. Welcome to the bench! :wink2:

I am allergic to morphine and codeine and have always been really sensitive to all pain meds. I knew this going in as I have had 3 ceasarreans and gall bladder removal. But I haven't had any surgery since 1985 so I was hoping they had come up with something by now. Anyway, I am not sure what is triggering the Migraines but they have stopped for now as the Maxalt really works good for me. They tried several anti-nausea meds also with no success. So after 18 hours of nausea, I thought it best to just get off everything and just go with Tylenol, which helps somewhat. Every day I"m doing better, almost finished with day 3 post op.

Have you called your neurologist to tell him/her what's been going on with you? If you've not looked into Topamax, I highly recommend it. I did the Imitrex route for a while and just didn't like the way it made me feel. Kind of queasy hung over, kwim?

I went from having easily 4-6 Migraines a WEEK to now maybe 1-2 a MONTH (and usually I can knock them out with the Advil routine). It's truly been a lifesaver for me.

I have two little kids and it was awful having to lay on the couch in the dark because I couldn't handle the light and noise on a daily basis. Honestly, I had forgotten just how bad they could get until last night.

I really hope you're feeling better soon.

hugs

I have problems with my neck and back, and something in the Operating Theatre really stirred up my neck to the point that the muscles in the sides of my neck were so weak that they couldn't support my head, and every time I lay down flat, I came up with a blinding headache. I used to suffer from Migraines so I knew it wasn't that. The only way I could take any pain meds in that first few days was with Mersyndol Daystrength, half a tablet at a time sipped with a little Water. But that doesn't help those of you who are sensitive to codeine. I have never had any issue taking pain tablets, if I snap them in half they go down fine.

One thing I will note is that the pain meds I was prescribed (they contain 50mg of Tramadol Hydrochloride incase you want to check your box) made me very nauseus. My grandmother took 2 doses of the same pill once and vomited for a week. They are bad news for sensitive people. Better to take paracetamol.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
