I'm new to all this and I need some questions answered

Recommended Posts

I'm starting to get info on this system, and I think I want to get the procedure done. But I don't know anyone my age whose had it done and I really need some questions answered.

A lot of social activities are focused around food. I know that my friends and I go out to dinner and talk about what we've been up to after we get back from college. Has having the Lap Band made you not go out with friends as much? I don't think I plan on telling my friends (at least not all of them) that I'm getting this done. What do you guys do?

What is the post-op lifestyle like? What does your diet consist of? Is it hard to stick with it? I know this might sound like a question in school, but what are some challeneges you've had with the post-op lifestyle? Were you able to overcome them? How?

If you're not taking in that many calories (though you feel full) do you ever feel faint?

Is the port noticeable, uncomfortable? Does it disengage easily? I'm a baton twirler and there is a lot of movement involved. I plan on resting the for the first six weeks recovery time, but afterwards, is it easily moved?

Help me out. I know there are a lot of questions but I need to get some honest answers to make sure I make the right decision.

Everyone out there who has had success really inspires me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
