Migraines

yes, toradol works nicely too. the last time i was in the er i was asking the nurses to just shoot me. they thought it was funny, but i was so serious! at the time anyways. i always get it the same side of my head, behind my left eye. sometimes i think that if i were so use a screwdriver and push it through my ear, it would help. oh my, desperate times!

i drink lots of Water (now), but i think she was onto something with the being dehydrated because of the Migraine. i know when i have one, i dont eat or drink anything. i agree with you, the pain takes so much out of me! even into the next day, i am sore all over and just feel icky, even without a headache. sometimes i get a little "normal" headache the day after, but they say that is probably because of the drugs.

ok, i am still curious. where does he give you the injections? not like in his office, where on you will you get them? into what area?

I have tried chiro and massage to treat em. Didnt work most of the time. I was in a MVA and injured. Started out seeing them at that point. I can say about once in every 6 months or so, i get a Migraine that just feels different, doesnt respond well to tx and my neck crunches MORE then normal. I will go in and a day later be a little better. I have had 3 chiros in my history and one specialized (advertised) in Migraines. His massage therapist was THE BEST EVER but he...not he did it too hard and it was not great for me, i went back to my original guy, he is perfect for me. but at the end of the day...mine arent from that. I do get massaged about once a month but i dont really think it plays a role in my migraines as much as helping relax my shoulders/back and just feels good and keeps me feeling Fluid (which is hard to do when your 260lbs).

I even tried accupunture and accupressure and though i prayed it would help, it didnt either. My up bringing makes me favor eastern medicine but its ironic i work in RX Research in a big hospital (lol). Drugs are yucky and if someone can avoid taking em, that is PERFECT but sometimes you just fail those and end up needed the yucky stuff. The beauty in botox is the side effects a SO LOW...and always temporary (like if the person doing it does it in the wrong spot you might get a droppy eye but thats temporary and you make sure you are going to someone who has lots of experieince).

I think its awesome chiro helped and i think others should try it, but my personal exp. wasnt braggable.

They call the area the headache band, its your forhead, temple region, back of the head/neck and if you have shoulder problems they can give a little there. Dr. Hogan says it depends upon the location of the Migraines the pattern he will use. I know i will get it in the forehead, and shoulder. He said its several (?) tiny injections. I want to say that he said they also can do it in the scalp...? OH and he said sometimes he will do something near the jaw/ear because the transmiginal nerve can really react there for some people (I hope he does that for me because i can always tell i am getting a Migraine because first my jaw on 1 side will hurt, i will catch myself rubbing it and then go "Uh Oh"

My Migraines have been much less frequent since banding. I suffer from hormonal migraines due to LOW estrogen swings. The weight loss has kept my estrogen levels high and lessened my migraines!

Hi Nikki - wow - that's great! I'm so glad for you - I can't help but think that eating lots of Protein and cutting out the breads and sugar has got to help the Migraines. I am a little concerned about the time immediately after the surgery - the liquid part of the diet. Was this a Migraine trigger time for you - I tend to eat when I have a migraine - not sure if it really helps - seems to some of the time. Concerned with NOT eating and the possibility of headaches because I'm not eating???

No I didn't have any Migraines while I was on liquids. In fact I really didn't have a Migraine until about 3 months after surgery. My migraines are PURELY HORMONAL though. I don't have any food triggers, I do have smell triggers though. If I'm exposed to exhaust fumes, strong perfumes, or paints I sometimes get them.

I actually felt great during my liquid phase. I did get a little lite headed a few times, but not too bad. The worst part for me was the Clear Liquids stage (week 1), when I got past that, it was a breeze!

That is too cool about your Migraines getting better. I wonder about hormones with mine, but cant pin it down (everytime i try, it disproves itself).

OM-as for the Protein Powder, the nutritionist/dietician i am seeing (because my insurance co requires it) has helped me with a few brand recomendations because of my food triggers. I am going to try Metagentics BX (bariatric)...something or rather. Its soy free and artificial sweetener free. She wants me to try that for a few weeks and see if i can tolerate it, if not we move onto other things on her list. Since i am doing this prior to my surgery hopefully i will have found one i can tolerate prior to actually needing it.

I also crave food during and just after a Migraine. Mine is sugar. I normally have a sweet tooth but when its migraine time OMG....i could eat straight sugar. It doesnt pass really until the next day. I dunno if sugar is just a subconcious comfort or because it spikes things in your body that make you feel better (chocolate=endorphines). This will be something i am going to have to deal with now and forever because the lap band cant save me from that.

Hope you all have a great weekend. I am getting the startings of a headache now, so i am going to try and cut it off and log off my computer.

I have them too! I'm glad I'm not alone. So far no relief with the weight loss. They have gotten worse I think because I'm hungry so much of the time. I haven't reached the sweet spot yet so I've pretty much been dieting. I didn't realize I'd be so hungry with this band. I go for my 5th fill on june 2nd. I know I'm close but still. These headaches are the worst. I feel so bad for my husband when I complain. He's the best but I hate feeling like a whinner. I'd love to try botox but I don't think insurance will pay for it. It's the only thing I haven't tried. Most treatments run 700 dollars at least. Then last 4-6 months. Good luck hope you get some relief. One last bitch. I hate Dr's who make you feel like a drug addict for needing pain medication. I have an easier time getting pain killers for a sore tooth than a mind blowing migraine! Lame so lame! Chrissie

Unfortunately for us Migraine sufferer's, the reason it is so hard to get pain killers for Migraines when you go to the doc is because Migraine and back pain are the top excuses for pain med requests (for abuse purposes) and docs and ERs know this so that is why it is so hard to get them. Keep in mind to that anything with codine in it can make a migraine worse, codine is also a trigger for migraines. Personally, if I'm gonna get a pain killer high, I don't want it to be with a migraine. Thank goodness Imitrex works for me.

Today was my third day with 25mg of topamax for 7 days. Next week 50mg. Thanks for letting me know what I will be in for. Does anyone know where it says we can only have 3 shots of Toradol per in a year because it does dammage to kidneys? Two docs have told me this but they tell me this while I am getting shot and can't really talk.

Its true that toradol (like all drugs) has side effects. You must be monitored for 30 minutes after your injection because the most severe (and rare) is torsauds (your heart beats out of rythm and this is hard to reverse and can kill you). We give it in the hopital all the time and there is no limit i know of as far as the number of doses they will give (there is a maximum per day etc). This is why the wont just give it to you and let you do it yourself at home.

I am in a zone right now with mine and it might (???) be from the corgard (nadolol a blood pressure drug i had to take before my insurance would cover botox). I will know more in a few weeks but it this works, then hey ALRIGHT.

Topamax is a drug that i have such mixed emotions about. I really hope it works well for you. It did help mine but the side effects became so severe that i couldnt wait to get off of it. I was on it for just about 2 yrs and my dose slowly went up and then down just a little till we came off.

Side effects in order (that i remember): tingling hands(would go away but when dose change it would come back), funny taste in my mouth that made me give up soda pop(constantly), weight loss (about 15 lbs), no libido, dryness (yeah, down there), depression (twice, 2nd bout was really tuff!!), gas (then we decreased my dose a little), Constipation (just a little), then about at 1 1/2 yr i realized my hair was about 1/2 the thickness it had once been and the texture was more fine (I had thick, coarse hair) and 2 months worth of NON-STOP YEAST & Urinary tract infections. The doctors said the side effects listed above were not topamax except for tingling, taste, and then yeast/uti. I work in clinical drug research and researched for myself...guess what those other side effects were from the drug (they are listed on the literature the bottle comes with if you read it).

I guess when my friends have be told to try topamax i say "Thats a good idea (if their h/a's are bad) but i say "Watch out for your hair and your moods (depression) if you notice those, think about it being the drug and weigh your choice.

So i am praying and going with ya...funny thing Migraine what works for one doesnt work for the other...!

XOXOX:cool2: (shades from the sun..."Photosensitivity"

Always glad to share the info (the internet, what a great thing).

What are you gonna talk to the doc about? I hope i didnt scare you from trying it, if your Migraines are bad, and youve tried all else, try it. Just go in with eyes open.

Totally the best to you. Overweight and migraines...sometimes i look up and say "God, was i a bad girl" just kidding =):smile2:

I have to admit that I also worry what the result of a lapband will be on my Migraines (don't have a lapband yet). I never had a Migraine until after my total hysterectomy but, when I got them, I got them with a vengeance! Mine last 3 days! My main triggers are not enough sleep, barometric changes, strong smells and jittery movies (like Blair Witch, etc). Many medications and preventatives were tried without success. I even self-injected imitrex. I finally went migraine-free for a year using an OTC Vitamin cocktail my neurologist suggested I try. But, after a year, the migraines were back. I now take relpax which doesn't get rid of then but makes them tolerable. I figure the surgery will either kill the migraines or intensify them. I hope for the former but only time will tell.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
