Anyone not on a pre-op diet before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was not on a diet either before surgery. I think it would of been better to be on a diet the week of surgery. My liver was huge (I think because I did not do the liquid before surgery) During surgery it was punctured and I had 2 blood transfussions. so in hind site - I think diet before is important.. hope this helps!

I did liquids for 2 days - that's it. Thank goodness. After I had the surgery - I didn't want to mess anything up and I had to do 2 weeks Clear Liquids and 2 weeks full liquids but b/c I was forced after the surgery to do it , I did it. But I don't know if I could have done it 2 weeks before the surgery. I am so glad I had a surgeon that just said 2 days before and that's it! So be happy and good luck!

All Drs are different but.... I have never heard of a Dr. saying it is a bad thing to be on a low fat diet prior to surgery. I was on liquid Protein Shakes only for the two weeks prior to surgery. Lost 20 pds and had a very short surgery (12 mins) that was very easy to recover from. Then being on the post op diet was a snap. I'm down another 20 pds in the 4 weeks since. That's 40 pds since the process started.

I was not required to do any pre-op diet. I specifically asked my surgeon this question - his reply was that he does not request a pre-op diet for everyone - for him it depends on the patient, the BMI, the risk of liver issues, etc. Every surgeon is different though.

Wow! This discussion has been very helpful to me. Thanks to all that wrote in.

I have about 2 months to go in the 6 month monitored period. I was given a pre-op diet and thought that it was insurance that required that rather than the doctor. My BMI is less than 36 (35.2 last visit) so I don't think I should lose weight now or my BMI will not be within the approved range.

Another possible issue for me, the lapband doctors office measured my heigth at 5' 3" - a recent annual checkup with my GP measured me at 5' 2". Has anyone every had the lapband people change the heigth they originally recorded? Some where in between the 2 measurements may make a lot of difference in my BMI.

I can't believe how many different diets are out there! I think I will have some Italian food that I have been craving tonight - healthy, but not in a can!

I had my appointment yesterday and the doc told me no need for a diet, just Do Not Gain anything prior to surgery! I have to fast starting at 10pm the night before surgery. (no problem- not a night eater)

So today I had a light Breakfast, Soup for lunch, and will have more soup for dinner I think.

Because I am a cash customer, my pre-op is this Tuesday and surgery is scheduled for Wednesday!

My BMI is 51! OUCH! :(

I am on a special diet for 10 days to 2 weeks before surgery, but it isn't liquid (thank God!). I expected that from what I'd read here, but my Dr. has a specific program that is no carb, very low fat, and pretty much low everything else with Isopure 3 times a day inbetween. I, too, think it's a good idea because I can get my body used to less calories and carbs. I never knew until this program how important Protein is to healing and feeling well. I'm not thrilled with my diet, but at least I get to eat some things, and the Isopure between meals helps with the cravings. I've lost 22 pounds since beginning, so anything I lose this last 2 weeks is gravy. After reading about the liver puncture I'll be sure to take it VERY seriously! Thanks for sharing one of the complications that can happen.

I am not required to do any sort of preop diet other than I have to lose 10 pounds so that my liver will be reduced. I was given phenterimen to help with that. I am so happy that I do have to do any sort of liquid diet. I have to stop drinking and eating at midnight.

I was so glad to see this post. I was going to call my doctor today and yell at him because the only pre-op "diet" they put me on is start my chewable vitamins and try to eat a low carb hi Protein diet the 2 weeks before my surgery so that begins today for me. I am also supposed to start not drinking with meals and chewing more. I have a BMI 0f 37. Now I feel better seeing he is not the only Dr. not having his patients doing liquids.

I went today for my pre-op testing and NO liquid diet for me! I just have to "watch what I eat and not gain weight"...pretty much - don't go on a last supper binge.

Oh - and my BMI is 44.

The day before my surgery, I have to be on full liquids and then nothing after midnight.

I guess every surgeon is different.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
