Finally ready to do the deed.

Recommended Posts

I have been reading posts for a while and am finally ready to commit to lap band surgery. This forum has been very helpfull in my decision making.

My Mom, 2 Aunts and my sister have all had gastric bypasses and done very well with them, but I think the lap band will do me good.

One thing about this forum and others, it seems to be mostly the gals who are the most active on the message boards. I am sure many men have had this procedure done, and surely there are others like me who would like to hear their take.

Even though my insurance is through a local hospital, they have a written exclusion for weight loss surgery, even though my dr. supports it, so I think I will be heading to TJ. I am going to make the call on Friday and I hope this will be the first step to a different me.

Thanks.

Thanks Angelyco, I have been to it quite a few times, but it really doesn't get very much activity. Maybe I can add to it, but I really am just a lurker. I do enjoy reading people's post though.

I'm a guy and I was banded 3/4/08. I was tired of just not being good at keeping weight off and, at 56 and diabetic, I figured I could just start counting the days until I was dead or in a wheelchair. I was the first person I knew of that was banded but I knew several that had the bypass and not all of them were staying thin. Also the questions about hairloss, etc on their forums worried me. Banding seemed a safer way to go and it was reversible.

I was initially thinking of Mexico but I was lucky and my insurance paid for almost the whole thing. I weigh now what I weighed 25 years ago, I just bought some shirts that weren't xxl. When I drop food, it doesn't land on my shirt. I stopped my diabetic pill over a month ago and take half the blood pressure stuff I used to. This is the second best thing I ever did in my life.

Anyway, you're right, I suspect, in feeling that mostly women get this surgery. They do by far but that does not mean that men shouldn't.

Good luck and check out the mexican places closely before you commit. I hope this is as great for you as it has been for me

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
