What did you eat the 1st few days?

Recommended Posts

I was banded yesterday and don't really feel like eating but I feel like I need fuel, so i don't get weak. I'm sipping a Protein Shake, and going to call my doc, but did you all eat broth, and crystal light and what not for the first few days? My instrc. say CLEAR/FULL liquids after sugery, but no specific days to start....hmmmmm

well i'm ending clears today and i don't think Protein shakes (Water based or not) are considered clears..at least not with my doc.

i did, however, buy protidiet's Protein cold drinks (i like orange and grape) and drank that.

i had ice pops (i switched off between sugar & sf so i'd have a little energy)

Jello

broth (beef and chicken)

apple juice cut with Water, any juice really you like

Hey - I am a bit concerned that you are already home from the hospital and don't really have a clear understanding and/or direction as to what you should be ingesting. Did the office staff and or nurses go over this with you?

You should be drinking Clear Liquids - I drank gatorade alot for the electrolytes and broth. Little sips of course. Take it easy and get lots of rest. Set yourself up on the couch, turn on the TV and have your liquids close by. Don't get dehydrated like I did - because it will cause your band to tighten. I ended up back in the dr's office getting all of my Fluid drained because my stomach had swelled due to dehydration. That was about 3 days after my surgery.

Good luck girl! Hang in there!

Your dietician should have given you clear guidelines on what clear fluids verus full liquids are, and also when to switch over. I'm really surprised how many people on here seem to go home after surgery without a clear idea - so don't feel bad - you are certainly not alone.

My guidelines were Clear Liquids for 2 days, then full liquids for 2 weeks (full liquids were described to me as anything that would pass easily through a straw). Every doctor seems to have different guidelines though, so suggest your call and check.

Best wishes for your journey.

I was banded on 15 April 2008.

My doc has us do only clear liquids the day after surgery. Then we do 14 days of full liquids.

A typical day, eating every 3 hours:

1 packet of oatmeal with 4oz skim milk

4-6 oz Protein shake (powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury for me....yuck but good for me)

4-6 oz of Soup, pudding, or yougurt

4-6 oz Protein Shake (Unjury for me....yuck but good for me)

4-6 oz of soup, pudding, or yougurt

4-6 oz Protein Shake (Unjury for me....yuck but good for me)

I've been eating a lot of Campbell's Tomato bisque soup. I put it through a strainer to get rid of the little pieces of tomato, and it tastes WONDERFUL. My doc said that some people have trouble with tomatoes, but it doesn't seem to bother me.

Everything is sugar free, low fat.

I also drink lots of Water and eat sugar free popsicles.

Hope this helps!

I was banded on the 17th. The diet i have been put on is 10 days of clear liquid. Days 11-14 i can add in Protein Shakes only. Than after the 14 i can start the full liquid like Soups, babyfood, applesauce anything that is thin enough to be eaten through a straw but without using the straw, and that lasts for 4 weeks. After than we slowly introduce the softer solids like cheese and deli meet and scrambled eggs. I know its strict but ive lost 15lbs pre op and 25 post op so far and it was only a week ago!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
