back to work...have a question

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I had my surgery last week (the 17th...exactly 7 days ago) and i'm back to work today. I'm on my last day of clears (which is killing me) and tomorrow i get mushies!!!

My question is: i have this pain on the left side..feels sorta like gas because it moves a little (comes in waves), but doesn't leave like gas does from walking. It's been a few days. On my doctors "things to expect" sheet it said i might have pain on the left side.

Is this normal?

Otherwise, things are going well. Wounds are healing well and i'm down almost 15ish lbs since surgery (i'll check officially tomorrow). I'm ready for food though..even if it is cottage cheese:bored: because i have little energy.

Totally normal. They pump gas into your guts to puff up enough space to do the lap procedure and the residual gas can cause all kinds of weird pains. I just delt with whatever happened for the first month. That said the pain should not be too strong.

I had surgery a little over two weeks ago and had the same feeling in my left side. I called the doctor and he said it might be the colon acting up if your not having regular bowel movements. Make sure to take in lots of fluids (especially water). if it continues though, i would recommend contacting your doctor. Good luck!

well i'm going to the bathroom. and i think i'm getting most of my liquids...def. 36 oz. or more.

it feels like a squeeze (like gas) and then goes away. weird. must be gas. this lasts for a month?

Totally normal. It will pass (heh) in it's own time.

Also be ready for sitting up at a desk all day. I noticed I'd sit for several hours working then get up and my incisions had "tightened up" (only way I can explain it) and HURT.

Make sure you keep walking, walking, walking around. You are still healing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
