RNY vs. LapBand

Recommended Posts

I love my band...what can I say?

I know of one person who had RYN and I've witnessed the dumping she went through. She also has gained so much back. I was worried about that happening, which is why I chose the band.

It's reversible and it doesn't re-route any part of my body. I loved the control it gave me - fills/unfills let me decide what "help" I need from the band.

I love my band too, but I am still new to this so time will tell. My friend had Gastric Bypass and she (who was 330 in tenth grade) lost 150 lbs in prob a little less than a year. You would never know now (10 years later) she has had surgery. She has probley gained back 50 lbs I think but she is still 100 lbs lighter than she used to be. She can't have anything with cream or she gets really sick, and if something has dairy and sugar togethor she is sick all night. She is happy. But she has gained weight back and RNY is unadjustable.

My DH's aunt has bypass 4 years ago and lost 200 lbs, then promply regained at least 50 back. she probaly weighs 250 right now. Granted she is thinner then before BUT she is also one of those people who wont exercise at all, not once has she. not even walk. She asked my why my skin wasn't swinging in the wind like hers. exercise really helps me and sure I will need a TT , and my arm wings wave at people But I am a true believer in exercise. My band is a tool , just a tool that I am using to help me lose and keep off the weight.

She still refuses to exercise. Said if she wanted to exercise she wouldnt have had the surgery. Sigh oh well you can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves...

I think either is fine. I would hope that no matter what WLS somebody chooses, they would change to a healthier lifestyle (I mean, just because it might be technically possible to lose weight eating nothing but potato chips doesn't make them the best choice.....absurd example, but y'all see my point).

Personally, I like that the band tames my appetite but I still have to eat healthier. It's empowering, to totally use a "girl" term, LOL.

RNY vs. LB......whatevah. I'd applaud anybody willing to make the big step to take control of their life, no matter what they choose.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
