Hi everyone. I got my band on April 17th - just one week ago today! So far, so good. I have had a lot of my questions answered by reading this message board. Thanks to everyone who posts!

Today I found a large red rash on the inside of my thighs and on the sensitive inside skin of my upper arms. What the heck?

It doesn't itch but looks like hives or something. Anybody had a reaction like this?

Jeannie

I don't see why that would have anything to do with your band, but I am not a doctor. It could possibly be a reaction to some of the pain meds you are on. The best advice I can offer is to contact your doctor.

It could be a yeast infection. Does it itch? The massive dose of antibiotics you get before/during surgery can cause an imbalance of your normal body flora (the bacteria and yeast that naturally live on your body). That can allow yeast to grow, particularly in areas where skin presses against other skin.

If it's yeast you can treat with lotrimin cream - if it's really itchy the doctor can prescribe an antifungal with steroid.

HTH!

Thanks AlysonRR. I thought it might have something to do with the antibiotics or maybe the whey Protein. It's not too itchy and otherwise I feel great so I'm going to take a benadryl and keep on going!

Take care!

I agree it could easily be a yeast infection due to antibiotics. If you were going to develop a rash due to the surgery it would have happened sooner than a week. Also, have you been sweating a lot or anything bc that could just be a heat rash or something...no new soaps or detergents?

Hope it get better.

With me, once it starts it doesn't stop until I put antifungal cream on it... I'm not sure if that's always true, but it sure is for me.

Good luck with treating the rash, and with your band recovery and progress :-)

I wanted to share (ok, overshare!) that after my surgery I had massive yeast overgrowth - not just skin rashes, but also thrush (yeast growing in the mouth and down into the digestive tract - white coating on the tongue, diarrhea). It was over the holidays so I phoned the band surgeon and asked him to phone in prescriptions for cream (for the skin) and pill (for the digestive tract) antifungals. I felt soooo much better a day or two afterwards. I wasn't told of this possible side effect, but I've talked to other post-band patients who had the same experience.

Hi Jeanne, I also got banded on April 17. I"m doing great but yesterday I noticed a WEIRD RASH on my neck and left hand. I am prone to rashes due to allergies but this one is different than my allergy ones which look more like hives. I have a call into the surgeon's office. Let me know what your doc says... Regards, Dolores

I just searched this site regarding rash after the lapband procedure and found your discussion regarding your rash. I was wondering if the rash has come back since you last posted?

I got a very severe and painful rash the day of my surgery once I got home. I had the rash on my neck, chest and arms (a little on face). It had blisters with Fluid in it. I was even considering going to the emergency room but didn't go. A few days later, I saw my dermatologist. She thought it was from antiobiotic that was given during surgery and to avoid antibiotics. I also spoke to my internist and bariatric surgeon and they all said it was from my antibiotic. I also ordered and received a copy of my surgery records from the hospital to see what was given to me during surgery.

Unfortunately, the rash came back a few days although not as bad and I am not on any antiobitics (rules out the allergy to antibiotics) . I have had to have several visits to my dermatologist for steriod cream and an anti-hystiman (not sure of spelling).

M y friend has a friend who is a doctor and she suggested to me yesterday that the rash may be from the LAPBAND! She has had other people telling her this because she has worked on many by-pass and lapband surgeries. She said the severest reaction is after surgery and then it will get less and less but still a rash. She says your body gets used to the band as time goes by. She also said it could be from the way the lap band interfers with the digestion of nutrients (not sure about that or how that would work).

Please let me know if you are still troubled with the rash and if anyone out there has had this problem?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
