Has any experienced excessive acne after banding? All of the sudden I have acne on both my cheeks? I've never had this problem before and wonder is there a connection. I was banded June 2004. I went to a dermatologist who prescribe antibiotic for a month along with a antibactorial wash followed up with a special cream. It worked for a while but the acne came back.

Actually, I did have extra acne after my band. It wasn't terrible, but it was a lot more than I usually have.

I know for me that if I'm starting to have an outbreak it is usually a combination of hormones, being dehydrated and constapated.

When were you banded?

I have Rosacea, which gives me problems when I eat or drink certain things. For me, too much dairy or alcohol (liquor) makes my cheeks (by my nose) kind of swell and get puffy and red, as if I am flushed. Acne is associated. I have a topical antibiotic gel which helps alot to reduce redness and breakouts. But some of my acne is just that, acne. Not sure about post-banding, but I'd bet it's diet related, since that's the big thing that has changed. Maybe Google rosacea and see if that's you? Your dermatologist will help.

I still SWEAR by the works of ProActive solutions!! You MUST MUST MUST do it religiously everyday or it will be worthless though. I can tell just after two days of skipping! There is also a cream that you can get, I get mine in Mexico that you can use for your face (Clindomyacin). It is prescription medication for acne here in the states but in Mexico it is about $11.00 a bottle!!!

My acne seemed to have actually improved with my healthier eating lately. especially the liquid stage! So much fluid!

LOL...Here is a question I can really help with!! I actually am an office manager for a dermatologist! hehe! Go back and see your dermatologist. There are so many medications out on the market that no one should have to suffer with adult acne or rosacea! What I found that works best for me (everyone is different) is a pill called Spirnolactone. It is actually a Water pill. But it is good at treating acne. The latest and greatest is called the blue light. We just got one at our office and we are testing (ok, playing) with the other girls in the office that have acne.

Rosacea is tricky but can be dealt with with oral antibiotics and a solution called Metrogel or Metro lotion..I will write more later, 30 min to my pre-op...but call your dermatologist!

Love ya guys!!!

That is really weird...I had acne before banding, but now since I've been banded I've had very little. Let us know what you find out.

Vinesqueen,

I was banded Jun 04.

"a combination of hormones, being dehydrated and constipated" This could be a part of the problem. My Water intake has decreased lately.

I have another visit in 2 weeks I will inquire about "Spirnolactone"

Thanks

LOL...yes was looking up directions to the dr office and saw the post. Made it to the appt on time...LOL Proactive works for some but not all. The same thing with rxs given by your dermatologist. It is finding the "sweet spot" (hehe) of orals and topicals to clear you up. I like the topical cream called Tazorac. It is also used for wrinkles..hehe!! Works miracles for me. I will probably have to switch back to just topicals after surgery. Spirnolactone pills are HUGE!!!! Could take a while to crush them. Might make two meals out of them...LOL!! If ya'll (yes I am in Texas) have any concerns, just let me know and I will ask the nurse here in my office, if anyone of you are in the DFW area, let me know. I will hook you up with my doctor.

I've had the same issues with acne, and I agree that ProActiv is great; however, I have found a miracle cosmetic line that actually helps with the acne. It's Bare Escentuals, and I order it from QVC since I don't have a Bare Escentuals botique near me. I cannot believe what it has done for my skin!!! I started with just the moisturizers and then the foundation (it's a powder form, but incredible) and now I'm using it ALL!!! You might want to give it a try. If you order from QVC, you can try it for a month and get your money back if you don't like!

Surby's right. That stuff is great! I can't get it anywhere near me, but I go to a Louisville,KY once a year and buy it at a Ulta store. Ulta also sells it online. I also get samples of it from ebay when I want to try something new. I joined the Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals club from their web site and they send it to me every couple of months or so. I can't say enough how much I love it.

I use it too! You can even sleep with it and I have found when i break out, if I dust on the Mineral veil, it keeps me from breaking out. If I leave it on overnight, I get less acne.

When I would use acne soaps, etc I found I broke out more!

Also, someone said that when you lose weight, the estrogen that is trapped in our fat come out and go into our system. I guess it affects some people with acne and some to not get acne, just depends on your system..

I also bought some natural soap called Kiss My Face in Lavender/Olive oil.

I like the topical cream called Tazorac.
I have used the gel form of this, which is the stronger of the two. The cream didn't really do much for me, but the gel really works. I have to watch out, though, cause it REALLY dries out my skin, so I can't use it every day.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
