Surgery on Monday and I am finally APPROVED!

Recommended Posts

I really didn't think it was going to happen but I just got the call and I am approved for my surgery on Monday. I have gone through all my tests and pre op appt but the psychologist took forever to send in his evaluation. My doctor’s office sent in the paperwork last Wednesday without the evaluation. The insurance company called this morning for them to fax it over and wellah! Approved. I really didn't think it was going to happen because I did not have a 6 month supervised diet that they require. My PCP sent a vague letter that said I tried WW, LA weight loss, phentermine, maridia, etc. No dates or anything. My insurance company is BCBS Healthy choices plan of Rochester, NY.

I guess they must have liked my heartfelt letter I wrote to them. If you would like to read it you can go to my blog Shrinking Alesha. It was my first post. I will be documenting my journey there.

Alesha,

I wish you the very best with your surgery and a speedy recovery too....I will keep posted on your future progress.

I was banded 3/18/08 and completely understand the accomplishment of getting approval. It was a scary part for me as well, but gratefully I made it through.

I have started a new journey in my life and look forward to sharing yours.

Hugs

Paula

Congrats! I like you must have had a very frustrating journey to approval. Getting any information from the surgeons office was like pulling teeth. I would not even have made my pre- op appointment if I would not have called and asked to know what was going on, and they told me I had an appointment on the 17th, knowing already my surgery was the 28th. I was fit to be tied, and DID NOT want to start off on the wrong foot with the doctor operating on ME! I'm st to go, anxious, nervous, and full of all the other emotions too. I'm ready to start this new chapter in my life. GOOD LUCK, and a wonderful BLOG.

Congratulations, Alesha! All of your hard work is paying off.

I love the cartoon on your blog! "What fits your busy schedule better, exercising one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day?"

Eep.

Keep us posted on how you're progressing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
