Banded yesterday, in pain

Recommended Posts

Hi, all - after many months of trying to get insurance approval, I was finally banded yesterday at NYU. I came out of the surgery in very little pain...none of the shoulder pain that a lot of people have, no gas, nothing. Today, I'm home from the hospital, and I feel all sorts of pain - gas, port site pain, general soreness, etc. I know it's just going to take a little time for those pains to fade, but I'm feeling lonely and scared...did I make a mistake? Will the pain stop? Will I be able to tell when I'm full? (On these clear/thin liquids, I can't really tell if I'm full or not.)

I sure do wish I could eat a burger and fries tonight. But I can't, and I won't. Is anyone in a similar boat? Or have you been in a similar boat before?

Any words of wisdom are much appreciated!

hi,

welcome to LBT.

the pain WILL stop. have you been taking your pain meds regularly? if not, try to do that. i've heard walking helps with the gas.

it does get better... :Dancing_biggrin:

and good decision on forgoing the burger... :glare:

Thanks, LJM. It's a good thing I wouldn't even be able to swallow the burger, because it's definitely calling my name!

I'm hoping some sleep and a day or two will bring this pain down to a more reasonable level. And even though I don't like painkillers, I did take some - it helped me sleep for a while this afternoon.

I'm going to try to be patient with this process! It'll all be better soon, right?

The pain will absolutely get better, day by day. Hang in there. Don't feel alone, your not. The liquid diet is tough but it gets easier, though its an up and downhill battle. You can do this. Take your pain meds and just relax, there is no point in hurting more than you have to. I took them regularly trust me, and as soon as I started feeling better I stopped. You will too. No, you didn't make a mistake, we worked too hard to get here to even consider that thought girlie, :blushing:.

It will stop and soon. You'll notice pain turn into discomfort and then that to nothing.

If you are in pain you should take meds.... use 'em up!

Some perspective, I have had children, gallstones, tummytuck...and today- dental work that consisted of sawing my bridge then pulling a tooth.

The band was a breeze compared to the dentist!

Hang in there and soon you will know it's all worth it.

My nurse gave me the BESTadvice... she said, "Don't be a martyr (sp?), take your meds." I took Demerol every four hours for the first two days, even if I wasn't in pain, just so I'd get past the worst without feeling anything. Don't wait for the pain to come, take the pills before it arrives...

When I had my surgery on 2-18-08 I remember thinking "What have I done?" I was sore, did not sleep well and my port incision hurt. I just thought that I had made a big mistake. I now feel wonderful, I have lost 45 pounds and am sooooo glad I did this. Hang in there. The soreness will pass. Give yourself time. I was feeling so much better in a week except where my port was and that took about three weeks for me. I would do it again in a heartbeat and I never thought I would say that. Just rest and do what the doctor says to do. Good Luck!!

Listenhard-

You've come to the right place! I was banded last Wednesday and hit a low Saturday with the exact same gas issues and incision pain and wondering why I had done this for...my health??? But I took my perscriptive pain meds as often as I could for 2 days and all I did was sleep, walk, burp, drink clear fluids, and pee. Then I shifted to Tylenol for a few more days, with more walking, less burping. Now, I'm feeling fairly normal and following my doctor's mushy/runny diet (the glory of a Magic Bullet...) and can sleep on my side. And NOW I can see again that I did this for my health.

Others on this forum completely helped me get past Saturday, so I'm paying it forward (hopefully with interest) to let you know you didn't make a mistake. I'm still learning to listen closely to the signals to tell me I'm full with mushy food...have had to cut out reading or watching tv while I eat.

Good luck!:blushing:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
