Dr. Vernon Patients

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I just scheduled my pre-op consult with Dr. Vernon, and was wondering about how long it took everyone to get from their 1st appointment to their surgery. A friend of mine took 5 months. Is that typical??

Hi I am a patient of Dr Vernon. I think from pre-op to surg it was two months but from seminar to surgery was a total of 4 months. So that sounds about right.

there are a few of us in this thread.

Welcome!

hi there...i actually just had my consult with dr. vernon yesterday (she was awesome) and it went great! i dont have any major co-morbidities so she said i was a great candidate and would shoot for surgery sometime in june. i had my labs done after the consult and my nutrition/psych/upper GI are all scheduled for 5/12, then a few days for the insurance approval and then they give a surgery date 2-4 weeks out. so, my hope is to be banded asap in june...i will keep you posted on my progress.

one thing i did that worked out in my favor was fasting before the appointment (NPO after midnight the night before)...i was able to have my labs done that day...of course, it depends on the time of day your appointment is though.

I don't have a date yet, my consultation has been moved until June 2nd. I actually switched from Dr. Vernon to Dr Robinson.

I was wondering if Brigham has a floor designated to JUST bariatric recovery, or are you mixed in with people recovering from all different kinds of surgeries? I work for a hospital, and I always feel so bad for the bypass patients who are on liquids while their roommates are chowing down on pancakes! They should at least put bariatric patients in rooms with eachother!

most of the floor is dedicated (on 10) but I do think there are some medsurg mixed in. IMO there arent enough bariatric patients to fill the floor.

I will say the care I received was excellant, mostly one-to-one.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
