Hi! I am new to this....

Recommended Posts

Let me start off by saying that I have been addicted to this site for a couple of months. I finally decided to sign up today! I initially thought about getting the lap band done but I didn't know how to go about it. One day I went to the Dr.'s for heartburn and my Dr. was busy so I got the next Dr. in line. I met Dr. Lee that day, he had had it done 6 mths. before and he totally set me up for everything. I have Aetna HMO and he gave me referrals to see everyone he went to see. I went to Dr. Storey's seminar (the Dr. that did Dr. Lee's) and spoke to the girls there. About a week after, I called his office to get an appointment and spoke to Brittney. I asked her what all I would need to bring in with me or what the insurances would require. On my own, I started calling all my Dr's, Obgyn and set up an appointment to get my psych evaluation done. On the day of my appointment April 10th, I turned in all my paperwork that I Brittney said would be needed. Keep in mind I had started this process even before I knew I wanted the surgery....well today I got a call from my Dr's and Brittney told me I had been approved and it would be covered 100%! Now, I am nervous, my surgery is set for May 19th...eeeeehhh! I am to start my liquid diet on May 5th...I need suggestions on how to start! :glare:

Good for you!

My suggestion for getting started on the liquid diet is that you do it gradually. Start replacing one of your meals for liquid now. Next week, replace two meals. By May 5, you'll be ready to go full liquids.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Anna. Congrats on the approval. My doc required liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. His plan is for the first 3 days, replace all meals with Protein shakes. In between I was permitted to have Water, crystal light, and sugar free popsicles. After 3 days, I was allowed to replace one of the "shake" meals per day with a small garden salad (only veggies allowed. He did say it was ok to use some lowfat dressing).

You can do it. I alternated between the Protein Shakes his office sold and using Slim-Fast shakes. The Slim-Fast generally tasted better, but the other shakes were higher Protein, and kept me from getting too hungry. Hope this helps.

Wow, Thanks Enchanted! That is great advice. I was thinking about doing something like that...I am going to have to stay strong and dedicated. The weekend before my surgery my cousin graduates from UT Austin so we will be there for that and on May 10th my sister graduates from University of Houston....parties...and on a liquid diet. ugh!

Hi, I made an appointment with Dr. Minkin in St. Louis for May 16th but I am going to a seminar provided by him tonight. I know I am jumping the gun a little but I am so excited about learning if this will help me. I am 350lbs now and just tired of being FAT. I want to look and feel better and I am willing to do what it takes to change, otherwise the only sollution I see right now is suicide, except thats against my religeous beliefs. It sure has crossed my mind though. I also have to figure out how this forum stuff works. I have never talied on a computer before. Thanks for listening.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
