Area under port incision has a firm lump -- normal?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was two weeks ago, and I'm feeling great. However, when I stand or sit, I can feel (with my hand) a large lump-like mass under my port scar. Since the port is not directly under the skin, what is this I am feeling? Is it normal? It is painless to the touch, by the way. Also, my stomach protrudes a bit in that area.

Has anyone else experienced this?

hi i have had my surgery 6 weeks now and i can feel my port. it sits just below my breastbone between my ribcage. it feels like a hard lump. apparently this is normal, some people are lucky enough to not feel it but others do. i have just accepted this as a side effect of the band so i am not taking it seriously as there is no pain or discomfort.

I had the same thing. Actually, it is still there. I asked my doctor about it and he said it is the port, even though it is under the skin a bit. I also had a seroma under the port incision. I would ask your doctor about it, just to be sure.

Say hello to your new little friend!.... your port!

You're probably feeling scar tissue.

The port feels kind of like a little button under the skin. Very small, very distinct shape/feel. "You know it when you feel it" kind of thing. There's nothing mass-ey about it.

That's the port. For me, a few months after the surgery it was not so big. I think it has to do with swelling.

If you feel it under the port incision, but your port is placed somewhere else, it's not the port. You don't feel a lump in your arm and assume it's your eyeball, even if it's round. :glare:

The port will feel kind of like a button under the skin. You may have to push semi hard to feel it, and it may be very tender when palpitated.

If you're just feeling a "mass" directly under the incision - my money is on scar tissue. That's what incisions do, scar.

I decided it was, in fact, scar tissue -- and guess what? I had my first fill today (which was so fast and painless), and asked my surgeon about it (Dr. Christine Ren, of NYU), fully expecting that she would confirm this assumption. And guess what?

It's my port!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
