I was at a BMI of 40 and had no problems getting insurance approval. I have BCBS.

The first thing you need to do is call your insurance and get a copy of their policy on WLS. That will give you an idea of what hoops they are going to want you to jump through for approval. All companies are very different.

My BMI is over 45 with no comorbidities. I am not approved yet, but have met all of their qualificaitons and am waiting. I have Anthem BCBS

What kind of insurance do you have? I have Harvard Pilgrim and it was a cake walk (assuming everything keeps going this way)!

Good luck. I am so excited - it is 3 weeks away!!

I have So Cal. Blue Cross. My BMI is 40 w/ no co morbidities. Getting approved was a piece of cake. It took about 2 weeks. if I were you, I'd ask your surgeon's office what your BMI needs to be to get approved. Mine told me it was 40 and anything lower would not be approved unless I had some kind of co-morbidities. They said they go by the BMI of your first appointment to submit to your insurance so don't go under 40 for that first apt. Good luck.

Thank you for your help. How much medical records/ past history did you have to provide w/ the BMI of 40 and no other health problems? I'm very scared I wont be approved. thanks again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
