Just had surgery on Thursday

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just had surgery this past thursday and went to the doctors today for my check up. I figured i'd give ya an idea of what it was like thus far because i loved reading those threads:rolleyes2:

The Surgery:

It wasn't as bad as i was expecting. I was sore (stomach), but was able to walk with assistance the first few hours after surgery. I was in recovery for 3 hours then i went home (out patient facility). I felt crappy that day, but not HORRIBLE...i didn't take any pain meds (only tylenol).

The second day it got worse. I wasn't hungry, but very sore and the gas was the issue. I walked and walked lol to try to get it out...that stayed for 2 days.

On SUnday i felt much better. The gas was almost all gone, but i've been hungry...and my energy is low. So, i switched to sugar ice pops (instead of sugar free) here and there to get some sugar in my system. That helped quite a bit.

Today I went to the doctor and i lost 8lbs so far. It felt good to get out, but i was tired and wanted to go home after all was done. On Friday i start mushies..and that includes (for me) mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, mashed sweet potatoes, pudding, Water based Protein Shakes, cottage cheese, runny scrambled eggs with ricotta, farina, pastina, cream Soups, etc. No Beans, no oatmeal. I'll have 3 meals a day: 4 oz. each for 2 weeks. After that i'll go to soft solids (tuna/chicken/egg salad, soft fish, chili, ground beef/turkey, etc etc). That'll be until i go to the doctor at my 6 week mark.

So there's my experience thus far. 8lbs down..162 to go:biggrin2:

Sounds like you are doing great. Good luck. I hope I do just as well. Does walking help with the gas?

I just did my stress test and thought I was going to die. I hope everything is good. The Dr said they didnt see anything wrong.

Hi, thanks. Yes, walking (slowly) is how the gas moves down. My back hurt the worst from the gas...i just could not get comfortable for days! I'm sleeping fine now and my spirit is way up because of that. Plus, i'm off until Thursday so i'm just taking it easy.

I'm sure you're stress test will come back fine!! I didn't have to do that because i'm self pay.

Congratulation on losing the weight. I hope my experience with the lapband will be that easy. I have been researching it for a few days. I go my first seminar on 05/05/08.

I was banded on Friday and am feeling better and better each day.

I'm up and walking (made it around the block today!) but very gassy as you all are talking about. Moreso when I take the Protein shakes (EAS low carb), rather than the Water or chix broth. It feels as if the gas is above the port site rather than below it. Also, I may have to call my surgeon tomorrow morning. My port site seems "pinker" than normal (I had a hard time getting the bandage off when I took my first shower) and it's a little warm. I don't seem to have a fever though. My lap cuts seem to be healing perfectly; no pink, no heat.

Best wishes to all of you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
