Obesity Law & BCBS IL

Recommended Posts

Well, I turned in everything in the policy required for the lap band, and after 4 weeks I was denied (in Feb). My doctor's office was shocked because I met all requirements. My doctor's office called me this week and said they wanted my permission to send my case to Obesity Law at no expense to me. I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with Obesity Law. I'm just wandering what my chances are that the denial will be overturned. I hate BCBS of IL.

Did your insurance company give you a reason for denial? Do you have appeals?

I don't know anything about Obesity Law, but if it's at no cost to you, it can't hurt!

I do have appeals, but not sure how many and in what time frame. I was denied because they said I had not tried pharmological asistance. That is not even what the policy states! This is so crazy.

I have BCBS of IL. My own doctors told me that I also met the criteria, but BCBS of IL would make me jump through hoops for several months and then still deny. I didn't want to do all they requested to be turned down. I ended up taking out a loan and being self pay. For me, it was a good decision.

Hello, I too have BCBS of Ill and they rejected me in Dec 07. BMI not high enough without 2 other things wrong. Kept testing and have high cholesterol and sleep apenea, re-summitted this past Monday. If they deny me this time I will seek some legal assistance. We are supposed to have great insurance coverage and we pay a hefty premium for it every week but what good is it if they get away with rejecting everyone. We all keep paying more for everything and getting (and accepting) less that there will come a time that you just have to put your foot down and do something about it. Good Luck. Let us know what happens.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
