No drinking through straws?

Recommended Posts

I never had this one explained to me. I haven't drank through a straw since the surgery, but was just curious what the reasoning was behind it.

Thanks!:)

I always thought you could. I was told that straws were fine. It will be interesting to see what people have say about this. Please keep us posted!!!!

You are not suppose to drink thru a straw because u swallow more air when u swallow. Believe me I forgot and drank a whole drink over a few hours time thru a straw and I paid for it later that night. I was so gassy and my intestines rumbled all night long. Wont do any damage to ya but it is uncomfortable when u are that gassy

Hi all! I know from expierence as being a Med Surg Nurse, that we always tell patients after surgery no straws. When you sip, you take in air and that can give you a lot of gas pains. Dietary didn't even put them on their trays. That was for people who were opened up for surgery. Laparscopic is different. But you still get some gas pains. I have not used any straws since surgery. I have enough gas with out them. :)

Odd - another of those differences depending on where you are I guess. The first Water they bought me in hospital after my surgery had a straw in it

It must be dependant on where you live, I am in the uk and have been advised to use a straw as was told this way you take smaller sips rather than gulping. I suppose you just have to go with the advice you are given personally.

I have had a horrible time swallowing air since I was banded. Funnily enough, I find that when I use a straw, I don't seem to. However when I eat food I still manage to swallow air. Strange.

Another one of those things that varies from surgeon to surgeon. I also was given a straw to drink liquid from right after surgery. I don't seem to swallow any more air when using a straw than otherwise -- at least, I haven't noticed any additional burping, gas, or stomach pains when I use a straw.

I was also told the no straw rule, but broke it after a couple of weeks with no adverse effects. I was banded March 4. SS

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
