Hi,

I am Jody, banded 2/17 in Mexico with Dr. Rodriguez. I was wondering, when I did my research the lap band sites said that Pop was a no no. Did that mean forever, will I get to have a Diet Coca again, some day or is that a thing of the past. I have been 6 weeks without one and I when I see people with a can of Diet Coca I seriously consiter accosting them. LOL...

Thanks for the Advise,

Jody

Wow, Jody, 27 pounds gone? That's great! There's conflicting stories about carbonated beverages. Some say it can damage your band, others say it won't. For me, I've tried a few sips since banding, and the bubbles are very, very uncomfortable in my tummy. It didn't even taste as good to me anymore. So I haven't had any problem giving them up. Some people let a coke go flat before drinking it. But that tastes nasty to me. Best of luck to you!

My doctor says no more carbonated liquids ever again. The nutritionist says it stretches out the pouch a bit and is bad for you anyways. I gave up soda pop a month ago now and I honestly think I feel better because of it. Plus, I use Coca Cola to get stains off my toilet and clean my car rims. Do you really want that going in your new tummy anyways?

Yep, it's true no more soda.... I just take a sip now and then and I'm good, I have to say that I feel better not drinking it.. Good luck to you I see that we were banded one day apart..Thank you for your post.

Just my humble opinion but I don't think the carbonated beverages will stretch your stomach any more than over eating can. But the reason I was told to avoid the soda's was for the empty calories they contain. If you drink Perrier which is carbonated Water you get the carbonation but no calories.

I can drink the sodas but it does have to be a sip effect. I can't simply take a huge drink anymore. It physically hurts to have all that carbonation in my tummy. Plus it fills you up faster and you are not getting in your Proteins, carbs, and veggies.

It is just a personal thing I guess. I drink one every now and then. Just be mindful to not drink and try to eat something at the same time whether with carbonated beverages or water. NO DRINKING AND EATING at the same time. EVER!!

Thanks everyone, you are right, Pop really has no value nutritionally and it makes no sense to drink it. And Jenna, knowing you clean your toilet with it has some how made the craving subside. I will continue with the Water and decaff. coffee.

Thanks again,

Jody

*ah-hem* using a cane sugar Rootbeer will not clean your toilet. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I have to go cry softly.

Crystal, you can also clean oil stains in your driveway with it and clean the corrosion off of your car's battery terminals. I bet you're really boo-hooing now!

Now pull yourself together girl, and go drink some band-friendly Water. LOL

Hi All! I was justed banded April 1 and have lots of questions. This seemed like the closest thread for the question about alcoholic beverages. Do we ever get to have them again? If so, what is the result. I will be on vacation in a couple of months and I am sure that a Pina Colada or some such beverage will be in order. How soon after banding is it allowed if ever? I don't want to make a mistake and get sick on vacation.

Thanks Susie

I had the same Dr. As Jenna and was told the same thing, it has been 1 year for me with no sodas or carbonation and I do not kiss it one single bit. 86 lbs lost is far better then how any carbonation could ever taste!

Yes we can have booze, but be careful! Because the alchohol will be absorbed in the pouch instead of the stomach proper, it will probably hit you harder and faster than before you were banded. Be careful! You will probably now be a cheap date, if you weren't one before!

Also, there is some research that suggest that drinking alchohol will retard your weight loss within something like a week of drinking the alchohol.

Jenna and Marie, I believe that those only work for acid based sodas like cola and Dr. Pepper. Rootbeer will just make a sticky mess. (and *sniff* sniff* NO I'M NOT DONE CRYING **WAAAAA**)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
