Should I be hungry already?

Recommended Posts

I am 9 days post-op. Right now I am allowed to have three Protein Shakes a day, but I find that about 3:30 p.m. I am starting to get hungry. I was wondering if anyone out there made their lunch shake a few ounces larger than it should be so that it holds you up till dinner?

Also, I can take quite a good sip of beverages at this point! I know that I should take tiny sips, but i can take one a little bit bigger than that.

It is Very normal to be hungry 9 days post op. I did not feel any restriction until after my 2nd fill and then it was only for a short time. I am going to go and have a 3rd. fill some time in April. I have heard of many people that have had to have 3 or 4 fills before they feel restriction. I do eat less and I am loosing weight but I feel I need more. I can eat WAY TOOOOOO much.

Good luck and don't get discouraged it will all work out.

Eileen,

I am right there with ya girl! I got banded the same day. But I am counting the day of surgery so now I am 10 days post op (gets me to solids quicker :D )

I get hungry too! And it is depressing me as I lost so much weight in the first week. :) But now I am at a standstill. I think it will get better next week when I heal more and can do a bit of exercise. I am in the "creamies/mushy runny" stage now. I am eating 3 meals a day but FAR less than I ever did before.

I need to drink more Water though. I too can take big sips without any effects. I think it might be that our swelling went down very soon. maybe we are good healers? I also heard that lower BMI's aren't as tight after surgery so we see the less restriction faster.

Keep up the good fight girlie!

Please remember that right now that your main focus should be on getting well. You may gain some weight back, but it will turn back around after you get a fill or two. It's normal to feel hungry because the swelling is going down around your band and you're wide open. (Just like you were preband.) If you're able to drink regular, instead of sipping, that's fine. Do try to get as much Water in as possible to avoid dehydration.

Eileen, have you tried adding a little fruit to your Protein shake? Some frozen strawberries, blueberries, peaches, a fresh sliced banana (or your choice)? Just be sure they're very well blended. The more you use, the thicker your shake will be, so don't overdo. Making them slighter thicker like this helped me feel "full" longer.

I don't watch much t.v. any more. Too many food commercials and cooking shows. Subliminal torture! LOL

You're all doing a great job!

I don't get it! How could we all have the same exact procedure done and all get different instructions from our doctors? How is it that I can only have shakes and other people are allowed mushy stages at 9 - 10 days post-op. Also the suggestion about adding some fruits to the shakes - I'll admit that it sounds elicious, but yesterday, I had maybe about 1 ounce of lot faw cheese and I have had dirreah ever since. So, that is why I am afraid to add anything that the doctor does not ok first. Here is what I did to try to solve my problem - Since I use the powdered shakes and it calls for 8 ounces of Water and 2 scoops of mix, I make one big batch for the day (3 servings); but instead of using 24 ounces of Water, I am using 28 ounces of water and adding one more scoop of powder. I'll let you guys know tomorrow how I hold up today.

Thanks to all of you for your help! I really appreciate hearing everyone's opinion - it really helps!

Eileen

Hey Eileen...I too am hungry...I don't know what to tell you, I am eating some sugar free ice pops to help and have the EAS shakes which have 100 calories and 15 grams Protein so Barbara at Dr. Kwons told me to have 4 a day. At night I have been having 1/2 cup low sodium fat free chicken or beef broth and that seems to satisfy me. I have no idea why some people get to eat and we don't but I will tell you it makes me really jealous:( . Give me a call if you like. I called some woman from the support group and they have been helping me through this giving me ideas. There is a group this Monday at Mauri's in Goshen, why don't you come?? Wendy

Hi Wendy

It seems as if you are feeling much better! Great! Yes, I had planned on going to support group Monday. I'll see you there! Thanks for the tips. I think I will go to four a day also. (instead of 3 1/2)

Eileen

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
