Well, my date is finally here and I am nervous... I am hoping I do as well as everyone else on here seems to do. I am scheduled for tomorrow at 10am. I am so greatful to have found these boards because I feel so much more prepared now. I have been waiting months for surgery and it seems to have just flown by ..I cant believe that tomorrow I am starting a new life. Wish me luck :D

I'm having my surgery on Monday, April 21st and I too am a little nervous , but excited also. I started this whole process back in August and have been jumpping through all the hoops that they have required me to get this far.....but it's finally happening and like you, I hope I will as happy as the others are on these boards I want to be a success story and look as good as they do.

Hi Jenny,

Best of luck to you. I got my band on 4/1 and am doing wonderful. The surgery was not bad at all. Had my surgery at 7:30 am. Got back to my room at 9:30. Awake by 10:00.

Had ice chips, walked to the bathroom. Was out of the surgery center by noon. Was prepared for much more of an ordeal. One thing did surprise me before the surgery. The nurse came in and said she had to give me a shot. My IV was already in but this little shot had to be given in the tummy.

It was a heprin shot to keep my blood thin. I hardly felt the shot but the med did burn going in for a few minutes. Was'nt bad at all. The nurse said that they give that shot to everyone just as a precaution; to avoid clots after surgery.

That was the only surprise I had. Just wanted to prepare you in case you get one as well.

Anyway, let us know how are you doing when you feel like getting on your computer. You'll do great! :D

Abby

Don't be nervous but it is normal. You will be fine, i'm Carolanne from New Jersey and I was banded on Oct 1st 2007 as my husband would say that is my new birthday! Life is great down 43lbs and going for my first fill. Keep us posted and kudos for the best decision!

Abby....WOW! you got to go home the same day? I'm having my surgery in San Francisco on Monday and I was told that they'll keep me over night. I guess it may depend on insurance. Were you a self pay?

Yes, I was a self pay. Ins would not approve the surgery cause I was 80 lbs over. I do take pills of high blood pressure, have sleep apnia, and other comobities. I appealed once but no luck.

I'm sure it's a good investment. I think paying that much will help insure that I stay true to my new program. I feel totally commited and am following doc's orders to the letter.

Down 13 lbs in 17 days. Started off at 200. Only 5'1. Have to loose 80. Feel like I have a good start.

Let's keep in touch,

Abby It's fun having friends on the same journey!

i to would like to lose about 80lbs or even maybe a little more, but I'd be happy with 80lbs. I have sever sleep apnea and that's the only reason my insurance is covering it. I know that it would have been just a matter of time tho that I'd start having much more health issues. Since I've been doing all the walking that I've been doing, I am now having problems with my hip area and knees. I hope that all will improve after I get some of this weight off.

I'm so looking forward to buying small clothing....like some of those really cute shirts that I see in the barbie size.

Good luck and let me know how your doing after surgery and I'll do the same!

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes! The surgery came thru without any problems and I was able to come home the same day. Yes, I did have the heprin shot in the stomach....was not expecting that but It wasnt too bad.... I am feeling pretty good today. I dont like the Lortab so I am just taking tylenol cut in half and that is managing my pain pretty well. Now I guess my challenge is getting to know and learning to use my band! The surgery was the piece of cake part!

Congrats JennyLynn!!!! You made me feel alittle better about having my surgery on Monday.....I hope mine is just a piece of cake. I don't think they'll let me go home on the same day tho, they told me that they'd keep me till the next morning. Husband is going to stay in our motor home since surgery is in South SF and we live in Sacramento.

Keep all of us up-dated on your progress!!

Good Luck!! I am having my surgery on the 30th and I am feeling a little bit nervous myself. By what everyone else is saying it doesn't seem like it's going to be that bad. I know that this is the best decision that I have made for myself.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
