I had my first consultation with Dr. Spivak.......what a cutie! ANYHOO-I was told that I needed pre-op weight loss to shrink my liver prior to surgery. I was only told low carb- I do not know what in detail this means. Can someone direct me as to what I should and shouldn't be eating prior to lap band so that I can shrink the ole liver- dont want my liver quivering (ha) Thanks ahead of time for the replies.

Hi SRoytan, welcome to LBT!

I'm surprised your doctor didn't have a printout or something to give you. Weird. In general, lo-carb can be achieved by eliminating breads, pastas, and most sugars from your diet. Limit fruits, but vegetables are OK. The main focus of your diet should be Protein only. That means taking the bread off hamburgers and sandwiches, not breading meat before it's cooked, avoiding just about anything with sugar in it, and sticking to lean meats. And drink as much Water as you can hold--it's very important and will help a lot with the weight loss.

This is obviously a very limited description. It's not all that hard or complicated, especially because this sort of diet really does result in decreased hunger. Good luck!!

Dr. Spivak had me follow a low-glycemic diet right before banding. No big deal, just basically eating healthy foods - no limited portions. Lots of vegetables, lean meats, no organ meats (like liver) or fatty foods, avoid fats, butter, heavy sauces. He gave me a print-out for it. If you can't get one, you can pull one off the internet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
