Hello all. My name is Brian, and I'm in the final prep stages before my surgery. I was approved by my insurance last week, and I'm now waiting to schedule my surgery. Likely within the next 4 to 6 weeks.

I'm excited, somewhat scared/nervous, but mostly excited. Ready to start my new life. Both my parents were diabetics, as well as my grandparents. All overweight. My grandma and father both died of pancreatic cancer, my dad was only 54. He was morbidly obese as well, and I was most certainly on the path he lived. Which is why I've now taken the steps to improve the remainder of my life. Who knows, I may get hit by a bus in 2 years, but I can guarantee I won't be dying due to my obesity.

I know a couple of close friends who've undergone the surgery, both in November of 07. One has lost 80+ lbs and her start weight was well over 400. She's doing awesome, and I'm very proud of her. My other friend has lost almost 50 lbs, and she's had a rough go of it, due to the psychological issues she has with food. I'm looking forward to what's ahead for my future.

A bit about me:

I'm 29 & married, going on 9 years. I have a son named Caleb who is 3. I'm a Marketing Manager for a software company, we're a compliance partner of IBM. I'm also an Audio Engineer, and a Recording artist signed to a small record label in California. I've always been overweight, but since I've been married and soon after took a desk job, the additional weight piled on. I've yo-yo dieted for the last 9 years to no avail. WLS was my last option. It's been a 2 year process getting to my surgery, and I thank God I've finally gotten here. I can't wait to begin my new life.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to gain new friends here, and find the additional support I'll need.

-Brian

Congratulations, Brian! The surgery will come quick. Once I was approved I barely had time to prepare for surgery. I was banded on 3/25 and am close to 30 lbs. I already can feel the differences in my body. Small changes. Better sleep, things like that.

Welcome and keep reading. I have learned so much from here not to mention how helpful it was right after surgery.

Dee

Hey Brian, pull up a seat! I'm always happy to see another guy join (we are severely outnumbered here by the ladies. And I'm sure they will use that to their every advantage, LOL). Browse and learn, my friend...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
