What's Up With Deli Meat?

Recommended Posts

I am finding that I PB on this more often than not. I try it again every once in a while but I still have the same problem. I only buy lean turkey or chicken lunch meat from the deli.

I don't get it . . . it seems like it should be easier than regular meat. I eat chicken, turkey, fish and beef (even hamburger) without issue (well, occasionally chicken strikes me the wrong way but not always).

I am sticking to a low-carb, high lean Protein diet and am losing well. I cook everything at home but sometimes I just need something prepped a little faster. Deli seemed the right way to go. It is so much softer and moister than the others and it is easy to chew to nothingness. So why am I always sickkkk?

Does anyone else have the same problem with this kind of meat?

Do not feel bad. I am almost two years after banding and the other day I was dying for some ham and turkey from the deli. I chewed it well and wow-was I sick. PB and all the rest. I do not know the answer, but it is a common problem. Be well.

I find that I avoid foods I don't trust myself with, i.e. any deli meats. I just feel that I'll get distracted and not chew it well enough or a piece will slip down before I can catch it

So when I feel like something fast, I buy (of all things!) Spam Light or Turkey Spam. One small piece satiates me and I trust myself with it much more.

Sometimes the "trial and error" method is so very exasperating!!

It works made into spread, but no, you can't chew it well enough, or maybe it's bites that are habitually to big.

It gets me nearly every time.

I tend to grind it up too and use as a spread. I add alittle light mayo and eat it just like that or I can put it on a piece of melba toast, pretzel chip, any thing crunchy. No soft breads or rolls for me, they get stuck big time!

I find it to be a phenomenon too!

About 6 months ago I tried a piece of deli sliced turkey, and had a miserable PB. On a teeny tiny piece. My only thinking is that it is too light (weight wise) to get into the hole, so it causes the stomach to spasm trying to dispose of it. It's all a theory, I just needed to justify why this possible could happen.

I have yet to try deli meat since then (

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
