New kid on the block-vitamin questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, just discovered it today while searching for answers to questionas about Vitamins. I had my surgery on November 15, 2007 in Richland, Wa. by Dr. Earl Fox. I'm down 68 pounds so far. I have had 4 fills with the most recent one really doing the trick. I love my new tool now, although it was hard getting used to not having the control to eat whatever I wanted at first.

I do have a question about vitamins. I have been taking the Vita-4-Life Multi-Vitamin capsules and calcium citrate capsules since two weeks prior to my surgery. They have been working fine but I have always had trouble swallowing them. Now, with the last fill making my band even tighter, I am having alot of trouble getting them down. I looked into some chewables on bariatriceating.com but they are expensive. I see that alot of people are taking the flinstone chewables or even the gummies. That works for the multi-viatmin, but what about the Calcium citrate? Does anyone know of a chewable? I havn't been able to find one with calcium citrate which is what my doc recommends.

I'm glad to find this place, hope to talk with everyone more.

I use Viactive calcium chewables but I'm really not sure if they are calcium "citrate", doesn't say on the box :). I find them quite yummy tho, and as for my chewable multivit, it's rather nasty but I do what I have to do . Since I'm 5 weeks out I can get back to swallowing vitamins as I did before surgery, I don't seem to have any trouble, although I'm not sure about the my Fish Oil, they are huge and scary.

Yes, since my last fill I've had to alter what pills I take.

While calcium citrate may supposedly be "best" available to be used by the body, the other kinds of Calcium still do what they need to. I am using Viactiv chews, which are not calcium citrate. They are calcium carbonate.

I found some calcium citrate chewable tablets w/ Mag and Vitamn D-3 that are Blueberry flavor made by KAL. I got them at the Vitamin store and paid $10.19 for 60 tablets. They meet the requirements of my doctor and nutritionist and are cheaper than the ones that you purchase from the Bariatric Advantage website. You can also go to Nutraceutical.com / KAL, plug in your zip code and they will show you where you can purchase them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
