Is a complete unfill NECESSARY during pregnancy??

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to get pregnant next month. I got my band on September 6, 2007. I know I'm supposed to wait a year, but with my circumstances I'm not going to. I know I won't have time to lose all of my weight before then. I'm 219 now and hope to be about 200 before I find out I'm pregnant. My goal is 180.

My question is, do you have to have a complete unfill if you are pregnant? I am so worried about gaining too much during the pregnancy. My 25 years of overeating have proven to me that I have NO self control.

So, has anyone gotten pregnant and stayed filled?

Thanks for answering!

Jennie - I think this really depends on each individual's situation. For instance, my band really tightened up on me when I was about 6 weeks pregnant, so I went in for an adjustment. In the interest of keeping me from ballooning up in weight, my surgeon only took me down from 1.9ccs to 1.5ccs. This was enough to get me eating normally and comfortably. I also have not had any morning sickness or vomiting, otherwise I'm sure I would have required more unfill. I was told that unless I tighten up again, I do not need to be completely unfilled before delivery. Six weeks after baby comes I can start getting filled up again. Hope that helps!

I totally agree that each person is different. If you are able to tolerate the saline, I don't see any reason for an unfill. I went through my entire 1st trimester without an adjustment, but at around 5 months or so, I started having a lot of trouble keeping food (of any type) down. I was vomiting several times during a meal and began losing weight which prompted me to make an appointment. At the appointment, I actually asked for a total unfill, but my Dr. convinced me to only take out something like .06. I noticed immediate relief and was able to eat properly once again for quite a while. I did have to go in for one more adjustment when I hit the third trimester. She removed something like .04 at that appointment and I have been fine since.

I am due in 2 more days and gained a total of 30 lbs with this pregnancy.

Good luck to you!!!!

I did not plan on unfilling and I got very tight around 7 weeks or so. I couldnt get Water down. SO I got a small unfill. Now I am 15 weeks and I started to get tight again, so I got the rest taken out. I am a little worried about it, I never gained alot with my other pg but I am smaller now so I dont know. I am hoping to gain 20 pounds no more. So far I really havent gained anything. I am also going to the carribean in a few weeks and I didnt want to get super tight down there and not be able to do anything about it. Good luck to you!

I just hit my 2nd trimester and still have the same fill I did a year ago. Just saw the OB yesterday, and he's not worried about weightloss (very slow, nothing dramatic for me anymore, too far out from surgery) until my 20th week, at which point I'm no longer allowed to lose, and if I do, I will need to get some fill taken out. Of course if I have problems between now and then, I would get an unfill. Around week 8 I had a period of a week or so where I was really tight, but I compensated for it with liquids. He wants to see me gain a total of 20 - 25 lbs, which makes sense when you look at the weight gain distribution.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
