Yikes, in July changing insurance companies!

Recommended Posts

I'm a teacher, and we currently have Oxford. As of July 1st we will be going to BCBS. When I go see the surgeon next week I'll have to make sure that my surgery is in June. I hope that's doable. I don't know what plan we will get with BCBS and I don't want to have to wait 6 months doing preop God knows what b/c Oxford is easy!

Have you already been approved with your existing insurance company? If yes, then how do you get your fills when BCBS takes over? I would check with BCBS to see if your surgery and fills will be covered with them. It might be worth the wait if they cover both, so you don't have to pay out of pocket for your fills when you lose your existing coverage.

Just a thought.

I had the same dilemma haing been approved by Harvard Pilgrim in November 07 and finding out my company was switching to BCBS Jan 1, 08. I lost the required amount of weight preop and was able to be scheduled for surgery the day after Christmas with the insurance company that had approved me. There has been no problem with BCBS picking up the cost of the fills; I jus get billed a co-pay like any other office visit. And...I love my band!! I've lost 73 lbs since starting the preop diet! Best of luck to you!

Good luck to you! If I were you I would make it clear that it HAS to be done in June or you will be going somewhere else. That should help them make sure you get it done then. Money is a great motivator ya know!

Good luck!

No, I haven't been approved yet, but with Oxford if you have a BMI of 40+ no medical direction is required. So I have no doubt I will be approved. That would stink, though if BCBS didn't offer fills!

I'm in a similar boat. My current insurance excludes WLS but my company has other plans with other companies that cover it. So I'm thinking about switching during open enrollment.

But switching in the middle really throws a monkey wrench into things. The surgeon consult is expensive so you need to wait until you are covered but then they want you to lose weight. I want to start losing weight now but if I start now, I'll probably get too low a BMI to be covered. If I wait until Aug., I'll be having surgery in the middle of the holidays -- a time I really need to be at 100%. By Jan. things are crazy at work so I'll miss my window and have to wait until Fall '09.

Obviously, I'd rather not do that.

I'm really seriously thinking about Mexico again. I'd rather get it done locally as there are several excellent surgeons here but these hoops I have to jump through are driving me crazy.

I don't have a problem with the pre-op requirements. I'm happy to go through any pre-op program or do any pre-op testing that is required. It's the phone calls to insurance where you get a different answer every time and not being able to control my own destiny (even more than normal when it comes to the US health system) that is driving me batty!

I will tell my surgeon when I see him and ask their insurance person how BCBS works here in Jersey. Wish me luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
