A little afraid to start eating

Recommended Posts

I've been banded for two weeks and was supposed to start on mush today. I was extremely busy at work and only had time for two Protein shakes. No way could I have eaten slowly and carefully. This evening I tried my first meal of tuna salad. Took about four very small bites and felt a slight fullness in my chest and stopped. Did I stop too soon? I know I haven't taken in nearly enough calories or Protein today. I'm just so afraid of pain or PBing, I guess I'm being super-conservative.

This band thing is so weird. It's like learning to live with a new and temperamental body part.

Hi Nancy

I'm also 2 weeks out and started mush yesterday. I had the same feelings as you. I was really hungry and looking forward to some mush, but was afraid to eat too much. I also stopped eating with very little food - and felt OK. I'm also a little hesitant to add food since it will be some many more calories than I had the last 2 weeks. I don't want to stop the weight loss. But I also know I don't want to go into a starvation mode.

I'm going to try a little more today.

Good luck.

Mary

I had the same experience. Just take it slowly, and if anything makes you uncomfortable go ahead and stop. You don't have to rush headlong into solid food at every meal; just try a little something with texture at lunch or dinner and see how it goes.

You'll be fine!

I feel like an old pro...and I'm only 2 months out!

Do not push yourself to eat if it is uncomfortable. At this point your body is healing. Anything before 6 weeks post up is during the healing stage and you want to give your body a rest.

If you don't lose weight during this period, don't sweat it.

Whenever you try to eat something..and all of a sudden you have a strange feeling...STOP.

Step back..and evaluate...stay on liquids another day...try again..perhaps something different...softer/wetter...try again.

Believe me you'll get there and be happier and healthier.

Thanks for the support everyone. I got a little braver today and ate mush all three meals, so far so good.

Mary, hope the mush phase is going OK for you too.

...and I'M two weeks out and moved to solids pretty quickly...the doctor's nutritionist said it was okay as long as I chew/chew/chew. (Will the word "chew" ever stand-alone with us again?!) I had bad diahrrea until I moved into more solids.

Which just goes to show you how everyone is different.

I'm a big believer in listening to your body. It's also important to try one food at a time to know what works and what doesn't. There have been few foods I've had trouble with (if PB'ing is the big indicator).

From my own observations on this and other boards, people who wait longer to introduce solids tend to keep their initial restriction a little longer...and keep the weight loss coming in the healing stage.

I think you're wise to be conservative.

Take care,

Elizabeth

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
