today's my b-day, I just got banded 4/2.

weird not to "celebrate" with cake, or dinner, or whatever.

luckily my wife understands.

i was really trying to get the surgery done before my b-day, so it would represent a new start and me getting on the right track.

any b-day advice from the group?

best regards from sunny FLA..

Yesterday was my birthday. We did a lot of stuff that wasn't focused around food. We went to a musuem, shopping. Oh and the day before I gave myself a good 2.5 hour workout as a birthday present.

Birthday advice? Take a good picture this year---because next year you are going to look back and realize what an awesome gift you have given yourself!!!!

Take a nice walk with the wife----share a snowcone or something you can have---and know this is just the start....and thanks to this surgery and weight loss, you will likely have lots more birthdays to Celebrate.

A couple of years ago, my DH had open heart surgery the day before his birthday---he woke up on his birthday to a new heart valve!!! His was an awesome gift of life too!!!

Happy Birthday---enjoy your special day, and welcome to bandland!!!

And happy belated to you too Tulipstar!

Congratulations! You just gave yourself the best gift you'll ever receive, the gift of living a longer, more healthy life! Now that's the best celebration you could possibly ask for. Forget the cake!

I was also banded on 4/2. My husbands birthday was on 4/12 and instead of having birthday cake I had birthday mousse. I used the recipe on the side of the dreamwhip package and made it with skim milk and fat free pudding. I only ate 1/2 cup, but it really made me feel like I was having a treat.

Happy Birthday! Congrats on being banded. I was banded on my Birthday (3/4). It was the best gift I ever gave myself. I have found that sugar free coolwhip (still frozen) is like icecream. Have a great birthday.

happy birthday to J! Think of how many MORE birthdays there will be to celebrate!

From another Floridian--Sun City Center--near Tampa (I went to a seminar with Tampa General--the patient coordinator did not want to answer my questions--hope you had better luck)

I can completely relate! I was banded on 3/21 and then celebrated my birthday on 4/2 and my first anniversary on 4/14. For my birthday i was on full liquids and we did manage to go out but i can't say i really ate, but i did enjoy the company! For my anniversary yesterday we didn't go out to eat but we did have the top tier of our wedding cake that we had saved for the first anniversary. I cut my husband a nice sized piece and then stuck a small bit in the magic bullet with a some skim milk so it would blend. The first 2 bites were good and i got to share that moment with my husband, but honestly blended cake is not something i'd recommend to anyone.

Happy Birthday ! As everyone has said, you have given yourself the best birthday present every.

Your post did remind me how much we folks who are prone to "the chubby side of life" focus on food (cake, birthday dinner, etc). This is something I am going to have to work hard to change as my own journey progresses.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
