Fluoro or no fluoro??????

Recommended Posts

Are there any physical symptoms of band slippage or erosion? I had my first fill without flouro a week ago and everything seems to be just fine. He hit the port right away and I really didnt feel a thing. I got 1.6 cc in a 4 cc band and seem to have pretty good restriction, not huge but I'd rather take it slow. I am wondering if I should have my second fill under fluoro just to check everything out though??

"The first signs of erosion can be deteced under fluorscopy."

I didn't word that very well. What I was trying to say is that a doctor can actually see something in the fluoroscopy that might make him believe you have erosion. The erosion process would have started earlier, but unless you have other signs or sypmtoms, you could walk around with erosion and not even know it. So on the pro-fluoro side, it's a good way to make sure the barium flows correctly, and it's also a good way to see how tight the fill makes it.

But on the other side, even if the fill looks good under fluoro, there's no way to tell how the body will act in a couple days after the fill. Most people don't feel a fill right away as the body adjusts, which is why some doctors don't feel fluoro is 100% accurate. Do chemo patients get injected under fluoro? I don't think I'd want anyone poking at me that wasn't able to find my port easily. Fills seem so "text book" to me that a port shouldn't be a mystery.

I had my first fill without Flouro on April 1st. It went very well. I got really sick about 20 minutes after the fill but after about an hour I was on the road to feeling "normal" again.

My next fill will be done without flouro also. It's so much easier to have it done in the doc's office instead of the hospital, and in my case since I seem to becoming the "Fill Queen" I don't think flouro is all that beneficial in my case. Obviously my optimal restriction level was not obtained using flouro. I'm at a good restriction level right now, but might go back for a little more in a month or so.

I think everyone's situation is different, and I feel good knowing that I've had some previous adjustments using flouro so that the docs could see that everything looked good, but now that I've had one fill without using Flouro, my next one will be without as well.

Nykee,

I guess I should clarify :)

You can't get sick from Flouro. Flouroscopy is an x-ray method used to see barium flow through the band. It's just an x-ray, it's not a drug or anything that could make you sick.

I had my first fill without using Flouro and got very sick about 20 minutes after my adjustment. At first I thought I was too tight and the doctor was going to take out 1/2 of what he just put in. After about an hour, I started feeling better so we decided to leave the fill in and see how I did over the weekend. I'm glad I did. I was a tad concerned at how sick I was and how it hit me really hard and fast. My doctor mentioned something about the Vegas Nerve. I haven't heard anything about that and haven't done any research on the issue, but my sudden illness subsided and I was fine after some time.

Ohhhhh OK

Thanks..

But whats the barium? You swallow this? Is it gross?

Nykee,

Barium isn't that bad. It's kind of a milky liquid that you swallow so that the doctor can see it on the x-ray passing through the band. When you swallow barium, it's almost like it shows up illuminated on the screen, it makes it much easier for the doctor to see it.

I believe that is the "vagus" nerve... :)

aahh, thanks!

Do you know anything about it? I did a search for "vegas nerve" and it brought up some rock band in Las Vegas. haha!

** sorry for hijacking this thread **

Donali,

Thanks for the links. The Vagus nerve does sound serious. Geesh, when I read about the brain stem part I wondered if I had done some damage :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
