I used Chantix to quit smoking. It was worth it. I had smoked for 30 years, and I was up to two packs a day. I have been smoke free for nearly a year now and have no interest in taking it up again.

One interesting thing with Chantix is that it blocks the nicotine receptors that release dopamine when you smoke, thus making it unrewarding to smoke. I found it pretty much blocked food receptors as well. I got no pleasure from food. Did that stop me gaining weight? Hell no.

It was still worth it.

Chantix works, I plan to do it again when I hit goal. The 2nd week on it I gained 5lb after a steady -2lb loss per week for 2 months. It spooked me, so I stopped taking it.

I don't know about Chantix but I took welburtrin to help stop smoking and it worked within 3 weeks and I didn't gain any weight. Everyone is different though. I started smoking again after being banded due to referred addiction but I think I am going to go back on the welbutrin cuz I am so tired of smoking. I was thinking about trying the new chantix but decided since I had a good experience with the welbutrin I'd just do that again since I already know how I respond to it. Good luck quitting, It is a blessing having these new medicines to help stop smoking because they really work!! Believe me, I was really skeptical but they do!

I am taking Chantix. I have (had) smoked for 24 years. My quit day was March 15th and I have not smoked one since. Yes, I gained about 6 or 7 pounds BUT I lost it again. I highly recommend the Chantix!

I also took chantix and it worked wonderfully, 6 months as of 4/15. I gained about 40 lbs but now thinking its not all due to chantix. I have a new Water softener and my body is sensitive to sodium. I smoked 1-1 1/2 packs per day and thought I would never be able to quit. Now waiting for approval from insurance to get my band. Hope it comes soon.

My DH took it and it worked wonderfully! He was smoking 2 packs a day, then had surgery in May 2007. He decided it wasn't worth it to loose weight to be healthy, yet keep smoking. He has been smoke free since Aug 2007 and has no regrets. As for weight gain, he didn't have any, but he did start it after being banded.

I used the patch to quit. I didn't gain any weight because everytime I wanted to smoke I would get some cold Water and drink it through a straw. It gave my mouth something to do with the familarity of the slender round object in my mouth, and the water helped me keep from gaining.

I've never smoked but I heard those pills can cause some crazy nightmares, but I know lots of people that they worked for.

But is it the pill causing weight gain or substituting food in place of cig?

For me, I substituted snacking for lack of smoking (since I normally use smoking to keep from snacking), and that caused my weight gain.

The only side effect I got from Chantix was the weird nightmares. I had them every night. It wasn't enough to make me stop taking it, but the weight gain was. When I get to goal, I'll dedicate myself to exercising to counter act it. Right now, I'm exercising to lose weight, not counteract food.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
