Why can't pretty clothes be cheap?

Recommended Posts

The only problems I have with places like Target and Walmart is that it's sometimes hard to get clothes that fit right. I need petite-length pants, and they can be rather difficult to find there. Plus, a lot of the shirts don't fit me right, for some reason. Either they've got those surplice-style fronts that cross over your breasts (NEVER hit me in the right spot) or the arms are too long or too short.

I believe Fashion Bug & Cato's have petite. I wouldn't know for sure since I never look for it, but sometimes when I've tried on pants they come to my calves and I know that's not right. And some shirts are ridiculously short on me, so I must wander into petite without realizing it, or they just make some items petite and don't mark it.

I think Bras are a damn conspiracy. I haven't bought any since banding till yesterday. $28 each at LB, which is the only place I like bras from. I don't even buy shirts that are $28 each, and its a BRA!

Laurend---I have just the opposite problem, a good 80% of the clothes in our local Walmart are petite length. I complained about it! They explained that every time an item is scanned and sold, it is for all intents and purposes reordered in a like fashion.

Where I live, is a border town to the largest Native American reservation in the country---the Navajo Nation. As a general rule, they are built with heavy trunks, and short legs. So they sell tons of petite lengths especially in the plus sizes! So they get tons of that in....

So my answer---and it is REALLY holding true now that I am out of the plus sizes....was to drive to Durango--which is a college town, and sells a totally different style and size of clothes. It is the strangest thing---the clothing dept.'s are NOTHING alike!!! I can go to Durango and find tall sizes----I have NEVER found one in our local Walmart!!!

So.....if you have a choice of Walmarts---look around---the customer base might be enough different to have them carrying a different size base.

OR you could come shopping in NM!!!!

Would it be possible for LBT to have a Clothing Swap? I know we're all on different parts of the weight loss journey, and I'm just getting into clothes that others may have outgrown.

Maybe we could get a thread going in our community groups and have a day where we all get together and swap clothes.

Am I being too naive?

A clothing exchange has been discussed asnd even planned, and promised by former LBT-ers, and never come to fruition.

Many of us have swapped boxes here and there---I have sent out many a box personally.....what size ya lookin' for??????

Gloucester: That's a great idea! In fact, I'll bet someone could start a business like that. Someone started a really cute resale shop here for children. They only accept things in perfect condition, including toys and furniture. They started doing a land office business from the moment they opened their doors.

Btw, I didn't mean to gross people out with the name brand thing. It's just that I find that certain brands fit me right out the door and they last through washing after washing without fading or pulling loose at the seams or losing their buttons. That's why I like a lot of Target's stuff: they're constructed better and they wash better. Wal-Mart not so much, but since their stuff is so inexpensive, I don't get frustrated when the seams pucker and the colors fade.

I'm short too and I've found that there must be a zillion gals who wear my same size. It's like they get one or two of my size (in short) in a shipment and someone is waiting there to pounce before I get there. Grrrrr!

I need to head to N. Mexico!!

Kat, thank you! I'm in 18's and 16's now, and really looking for blouses that fit. I took my work slacks to the dry cleaners and had them taken in. They say 22/24 on the label, but they fit like 18s. I think I'll just continue to get pants taken in until they tell me no more!

I don't have too many clothes left from 22-24 size, but a couple jeans here and there. I've been giving mine to charity, but I'll be glad to hang on to them for someone down the road!

But blouses are harder, and I have a ton of blouses that I don't wear anymore. I'd be glad to send those off as well!

I never found too many things that fit at Target, but what did lasted longer than Walmart.

I see Walmart as disposable wear, since it falls apart pretty quickly.

Walmart junior sizes are disposable wear for me, simply because the first time I wash it, it shrinks 3 sizes at least and I can't wear it. I have a whole load of clothes in my closet I wore once, and am waiting to be able to wear again when I shrink more.

Clothing exchange never picks up, but when I go through jeans (some only worn a couple times, I was moving quick for a while there) and they were expensive jeans, I send them out to people here that want them. I have been setting aside a new collection of jeans I need to get rid of, size 17's. I'll make a post in the general forum when I get enough collected.

Usually, stores like those and like Dressbarn have petites in limited styles and colors. I can choose either style A in black or style B in black. Occasionally, they'll have gray or dark brown thrown in for kicks. Well, I should say, that's what their plus departments were like. They've likely got a lot more in the regulars. Actually, now that I think about it, I think the Dressbarn in my hometown has an actual regular-petites section. I'm still getting used to shopping in the regular sections, so I don't even think of certain stores, even when they're great.

I used to get a certain brand and style of tshirt at Target when I was in plus sizes. It was just a simple V or crew-necked tee. Then they changed the style and it SUCKED. They made it much more close-fitting and changed the neckline to where it showed my bra easily. I was not happy. I need to go back and look through their misses section. At Walmart, I generally confine my clothes purchases to panties, sleepwear, occasionally shorts, and plain t-shirts, the type they put in the piles against a wall. Everything else I've gotten hasn't lasted, but the tees usually last for a fairly long while, or at least long enough to get me to the next size.

lauren, try some of the outlet stores if you have some near you. You will be really surprised at what you can find there. Name brand clothes for dirt cheap. Like BBK said, you and only you will know you bought them at the outlets.

I just recently bought a large Coach bag at the Nordstrom Rack for about $130. The original price tag said about $400. Then I bought a pair of Coach sunglasses and another pair of Fendi sunglasses for about $70 each. I know these are not clothes, but just wanted to give an idea of how much you can really save.

I did buy some cute tops there as well, as I have recently started to fit in the 1X size and all I had was 3X in my closet. I paid maybe $15 per shirt, some even less expensive, for Nine West and Calvin Klein, etc.

Venture out! By the way, if you do go to the outlet stores, make sure you have plenty of time to look through everything. There are so many hidden gems!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
