I have been reading a lot posts on here so I can get a sense of what to expect when I get banded (May 12th). I keep reading about people going a liquid diet before surgery. My doctor has not put me on that. The only thing he said was not to eat after 12 midnight. I know he is the doctor and knows best and I am not doubting his word I was just wondering why so many people have to have the liquids. Does it have to do with a fatty liver? Ok so did I just answer my own question??? Also what was the best thing for gas. I am trying to get somethings together well before surgery. I am sampling some Protein Drinks to see what I like best but would like to get all the things I need so I don't have to send my husband, he tends not to get what I ask for!!! ANY advice is welcome!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Not all Drs. require a liquid diet. Lucky you. My dr. put me on a two week liquid diet to shrink my liver. My friend had chicken wings the night before her surgery because her dr. didn't require a pre op diet. My dr. said that high fat foods effect the liver. So I would try to avoid them. You can have gas X on hand for after surgery. It helps some people, but movement was what eventually helped my gas. As far as Protein Shakes go, I used my pre surgery shakes. They had 14 grams of Protein and 160 calories. If you can find something like that. Good luck!

Like others said some Dr's don't require u to go on a pre-op diet. Depending on what your BMI is. But My Dr said the smaller your liver is the day of sug. the better the outcome. Meaning the less complications there will be, and your recovery will be easier and shorter... So even if he didn't give u one you may want to do your own. I'm sure it wont hurt...:)

Everyone pretty much covered it. My doctor isn't making me do one at this point he just required me to lose 5-10 pounds.

One thing the dietician told me about the pre-op diet is that it depends on where you carry the majority of your weight. If you carry your weight right around your middle (in the abdomen) then they require a pre-op diet and that also determines how long of one you are on. If you carry your weight in your hips, thighs and bottom, then there probably isn't as much of an issue with the fat around your liver.

I found a post here that showed the actual surgery on a UTube video. It was amazing to watch. You can see the fat around the liver and the tool they used to hold the liver out of the way. It was amazing to watch an actual surgery. I am going to show it to my hubby tonight.

Hi, Just to share my experience. I was on a two week pre op diet of opti fast only. It was hard for the first three days but then not so bad, My surgery was the fastest the doc had ever done because my liver was in good shape. He said it was a 12 min. operation! Very little general, very easy recovery. So.... two points, always listen to your Dr. and I have never heard of a Dr. saying a low fat pre op diet is a bad thing.

Well, that blows that theory. I guess each doctor is different. Anyway, it will be worth it in the long run!

Hi, Yes, My doctor put me on a two week liquid diet.. the best shake besides my own w/ fruit is actually Ensure.. (Chocolate) 4 of those per day are great!.. My doctors pre-op info. also says that you can have raw veggies, or cooked (no Beans, potatoes, peas, or corn) or you can have salad w/ vinegar.. so I have made this delicious meal outta veggie broth and green giant, just for one's brocolli and carrots, ( only 60 calories) combo the two and it's a great Soup. I also have hot and sour soup from the chinese restaurant, This really helps! still shrinking the liver and chewing at same time... 1 more week till surgery whoo hoo.. my date is 4/28.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
