C-section vs lapband

Recommended Posts

I have been reading alot about the lapband procedure and I was wondering if anyone has had both the lapband and a c-section and how they compare in pain level and recovery time.

I haven't had the lap band yet, but I have had a c-section and even though I sailed through my c-section and felt fantastic in a pretty short time, my understanding is the Lap band is WAY less invasive and WAY less healing time and WAY less painful.... that's all I can offer.

soon to be banded 5/27/08

I havent been banded yet, but I have had 3 c sections. Every one of them got easier then the last. I had my galblater out lapriscopically and was a piece of cake compared to the c sections. I have no worries about the lap band. Good luck

I had my C-section (vertical incision) many years ago when I was young and a much 'bigger baby' than I am now - so at the time I thought I was in some considerable pain. When I had the lapband I thought it was a piece of cake (at age 60) with very very little pain. (course in between the two I got to experience a little taste of real pain when I had a total knee replacement and they accidently unhooked my morphine pump the first night after surgery and left it unhooked til the following morning!!)

I wouldn't worry too much about the pain from the lapband (not to discount anyone else's pain) - but it is done laprascopically; some people have pain with gas which I didn't. My first night I had a little problem getting out of bed but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle on my own.

cthomas...

I've had two c-sections plus a variety of other surgeries and by far the c-section was the toughest, most painful and harder to recover from. Not to mention you had to take care of a new born baby on top of it! Plus the nice part was they actually put me to sleep for the lap band and not the c-sections and that's not very fun! Good luck, brandyII.

Also, I was given the option to spend the night in the hospital and chose that since I had complications prior to a varicose vein removal surgery and didn't want to take a chance. I should have taken the chance and gone home because I was fine except for gas pains which supposedly walking helps relieve that and I got no sleep in the hospital and would have been taken care of better at home in my own bed! Just my opinion, brandyII.

I've had 2 c-sections, and 1 hysterctomy. My lap banding was a walk in the park compared to those 3 surgeries....

That's a great question and I hadn't thought about it. I had a c-section (for twins) and I didn't think it was that bad at all, even with all the discomfort. Knowing that you all have had both and the Lap Band is nothing in comparison makes me feel a lot more at ease! Thanks!

A lapband and a csection are nothing alike. I didnt even think a c-section hurt much, didnt slow me down for more than about a week, but the lapband, I was pretty good the next day, went for a long walk.

I too have had a c-section, partial hysterectomy, gall bladder removal (lap type) and now the band..the worse surgery I have EVER had, due to my size, I had to have a sling put in and that was THE worse surgery thus far!! Lap band was even less painful than my gall bladder surgery and they are pretty close when done laproscopic..:D

Hello,

I have had two c-sections, and this surgery is totally different. I am having a lot of pain with this procedure, but I also have a lot of swelling and I have not been taking in enough liquids. I have to note that the pain is much different than the c-section pain! I have seen a lot of people say that this surgery was easier than the gallbladder removal...but it hasn't worked that way for me. :)

 I am so sorry to hear you are having such a rough time. I didn't even get staples, my doc used some kind of super glue:drool:! The only pain I have had was when I started walking the tube from the port to the band was being aggravated from walking but the doc told me it would go away after a couple of weeks..which really went away sooner!:) You need to be sure to keep yourself hydrated and that will also help your swelling but if you continue to be uncomfortable I would call the doc and just see whats going on!! Let us know how you are doing and take care!!:biggrin2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
