Am I Normal??:The Sequel

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I am post-op day 4 and have some concerns. Today I am having really bad pains in my back, in the kidney area. It hurts worse in certain positions, but is pretty constant. I have been drinking all my fluids, but am concerned it may be a kidney problem. Another possibility could be gas pains? I have not really had pain up to this point and was thinking its a bit late for them to start. Now, I could feel the air moving around for the past several days and am still a bit gassy. And yet another idea might be genuine back pain from laying in positions I don't usually lay in for a long period of time. I don't know? I keep going back to the kidney thing. Anyone else have this problem?

Hey TX,

sounds like major gas pains. try gas-x strips and do a lot of walking and try to hold your arms above your head when you walk. you've got to get that gas moving and hopefully out, it can be very painful. i was banded on mon also, but no major gas issues. i was banded in mexico and some of the other girls had some of those pains you speak of. hope this helps.

HI! I understand your concern. I was banded Dec. 17, 2007 and my experience was that I started having bad pains in my back that started about the 4th or 5th day out from my lap band surgery. It was more towards the center of my back and shoulder blades. Then a couple days after that I started having pain in the upper left rib cage! :Banane17: It was so hard to roll over in bed between that and the soreness from the port hole area... :) When I went to the Dr. a week after surgery for my check up he didn't know why I would be having pain way up there... :P It just wouldn't go away so two weeks out from surgery he scheduled a CAT scan... which showed nothing wrong.

The pain ended up going away about 3 days after the expensive CAT scan... I think it was air and gas caught up there and I wasn't moving around enough because of the pain. It was cold and snowy here and the only place to walk around was the house... I think when I had to walk to the Dr.'s ofc and park in the garage across from the hospital and walk all that way twice in a few days the pain started going away... Must have started working itself out. My CAT scan was $2,500.! :Banane17: The insurance did cover according to deductibles but still I had to pay for some of it... Looking back... I should have walked and got around after surgery more. I'm usually a very quick healer but this surgery for some reason kept me down a couple of weeks because of the pain... Staying in bed just doesn't work things out and doesn't get you back to normal life very fast... Just my experience but always talk to your Dr. and nurses because you just never know if it is a problem other then gas... GOOD LUCK and hang in there. It does get better! :)

No doctor here, but my unofficial diagnosis would be gas pains also...I agree about the walking and the arms above the head. I also found a lot of relief from sugar free tums and heating pads and hot tea. Hang in there...if it doesn't get better, ask your doc...that's what you're payin him for  Don't hesitate to call him/her with even the simplest questions!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
