HI, I want to know exactly what PB means. I know its a productive burp but could I get a better definition. I remember reading it in a thread but I cant find it anymore. Anyone knows where I should go?

Thanks:confused2:

A Burp with slime/food in it - like a little throw up but no stomach acid

something gets stuck you slime - saliva trying to lubrecate you stomach for food to go down - well it won't - so the slime and whats stuck comes back up..

Under LBT FAQ or something = it's on the home page some where..

Secert to NOT pbing - eat slowly - small bite - chew & chew !!!

I am 8 1/2 months out and I still forget - pb'd a little on salmon last night - for me it's usually just slime with like baby food it in - but mostly slime - heck I have pb'd on yogurt and pudding - oh ya you will bp some times if you just take one bite too many too

I have taken that one more bite cuz the food taste good - but know if I swallow that it's going to come back up - thank God for napkins :lol:

A PB happens when you eat too large a bite of food and it kind of gets stuck in your small opening. (So they usually don't start happening until you have had enough fills to have good restriction)For most people PB's are pretty simple and the food just comes up in the same state as it was swallowed without a lot of fanfare. For others, like me, PB's are a major event filled with a lot of pain. I get a 'stuck' feeling and the pain kind of gets bigger and bigger then I start to slime. (I know this is a really gross post, but you asked and I am trying to answer as clearly as I can) Sliming is when thick saliva starts forming and the only place for it to go, since your stoma is blocked, is out your mouth. You swallow some of it, but that just makes the PB worse because there is nowhere for the extra liquid to go. I have to stand over a sink or toilet and let the saliva literally gush out. You don't want to do this with anyone around to see, it really is awful. I look like a cat trying to cough up a hairball. Eventually the pressure kind of builds up and the food along with a bunch of saliva, comes out - like throwing up but less violent. More like a big burp but the food comes out and I immediately feel better. Sorry so graphic, but I wanted you to have a glimpse into the seamy underworld of the PB. If you don't want to experience this, eat really slowly and carefully. But I guarantee you it will happen at least once.

I have to be REALLY careful when I'm eating and talking - because I will surely get to going too fast and not chew and it's a PB visit to the little girl's room for me for sure.

kbniz,

I love your explanation. I PB real often due to getting in a hurry. I stand over the trash can sliming. Every time I say I will slow down, but it happens over and over especially 1-2 weeks after a fill. It is like a learning curve and I am a slow learner. IndioGirl55 please be careful this is not good behavior and your band can slip. I prey the lesson for me will sink in before something bad happens. It is no fun to jump up in a crowd and run for the bathroom. I think I finally have the tenique chew, chew, chew. Good luck.

What's not good behavior - I am a pretty good bander imho - I don't bp daily the only time is if I have eaten too fast - which is going to happen as I forget about my band sometimes..

I had my surgery at the end of 2005 and last year because of the sliming gave up and had my saline all removed. I slimed every time I ate, no matter how slow or how little the bite. The nursing staff had me convinced it was my allergies and I have since started allergy shots was drinking Mucinex and Robitussin (slightly worse than the slime) until I could not take it anymore. I have now gained all my weight back +. I made an appointment to have some saline put back in because anything is better than being over 300, plus I paid out of my pocket. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It got to the point that I started eating by myself because I was ruining my daughter and husband's meal as they would wait on me to run to the bathroom and they would know and hear what I was doing. Just couldn't take it anymore, but I am back to be being miserable in my own body. Look forward to some replies and advice!

I am so sorry to hear about your problems - My doc explained slime as what your body produces to get the stuck food down so in my non-doc mind I don't know how it could be allergies. But I'm not a doctor either.

It sounds like you were just to tight to begin with.

I think I would try what you are going to do and have just a little fill. Get that mentality back that you first had when you were banded and make the commitment to yourself that you are going to win this battle against your food addictions.

Our food addiction is such a difficult one to deal with and this is why I am always saying that the battle is more mental than physical.

I would suggest with all due respect that you may want to consider seeing a counselor too. I know that without my band - the losing weight would be harder - but I also understand that I can NEVER go back to eating in the manner I was pre-band and I will have to exercise for the rest of my life. This is truly a lifetime lifestyle change.

Come back to LBT (assuming you were here before) I find this site the best for support and information/education and friendships. It's open 24/7 - We are all fat people (even if some have lost their weight - mentally we are still fat) we understand the trials that you are going thru - we understand the comfort you get from food - we want to help you soothe and comfort yourself in other ways that with food..

Keep us posted on your fill and how it goes.

Good Luck we are here for you

Thank you all for your posts... I will be having my first fill soon and I am worried about PB. I think the hardest thing for me is to eat slower I have always been a fast eater. But I will remember your words when I eat so I don't have to experience a PB or slime myself!

No offense taken - I just didn't understand where you were coming from since I didn't indicate that I was pbing all the time :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
