Hey guys I am new to the site. Just started the journey of paperwork for a surgeon in Scottsdale Arizona. I am however a diabetic of 24 yrs. I am currently on byetta which has decreased my appetite and has helped me loose 14 pounds in the last month in a half. I am excited to venture on this journey of lapband. I attended a seminar on it. I am also glad I found this site.

Welcome and enjoy! I am still excited about my decision and banded on 3/17/08. It's a wonderful journey and the weight loss is the goal for life.

I too hope to be a bander soon. I am tentatively hoping for the end of May. DH & 2 DS are not for it so I really have only told a couple of close trusted friends. Why do I feel so guilty of something? Am I really lazy? Would discipline, diet & exercise solve my "problem?" Maybe its not a problem--maybe its just life that so many in our world suffer from obesity, and so far--not many permanent answers. I personally hate being fat. Have always hated it since the beginning of my memories. the problem with discipline, diet & exercise is that it can; and usually does, revert back to old habits. And then more mental issues--depression, failure and the worse, "lazy" sink back in. I'm not really lazy at all, maybe just weak. But a lapband is just the thing I need! For hope! Oh, and at my age, 50ish, health becomes the real driving factor.

Kudos

I am being banded on April14th Mon. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! I am so glad I have made this decision. I did self pay and for that I got to skip a lot of steps. From start to finish it took me about 3 weeks. I have started on a self imposed liquid diet (not required by my surgeon). I do worry a little about an enlarged liver, so I am doing the liquid diet for my own peace of mind. Good luck to all just starting and may we all become more healthy for life!!!!~piautecutie

Welcome to the forum! Best of luck as you work through the preliminaries. Stick to those pre-op diets and congratulations on making a great decision.

Just got back to school from my initial appointment with PCP. She is submitting for approval to Heathnet for me to be referred to Dr. Waldrep in Sacramento. Everyone, please keep good thoughts that I will be approved (at least for this first phase!).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
