Diabetes and "the powder".....

Recommended Posts

I've got to talk to my doctor about this, but I was interested in what other diabetics were doing with protien powders. Many people on this site swear by them, but I just learned that too much Protein can over-work the kidneys. Wow, news to me!!! Do any diabetics here use Protein Powder in their shakes, or do you only stick to small amounts of meat? My bloodwork already indicates my kidneys have been affected by years of type 2 diabetes. Maybe I should just try to stay away from it.....

Oh yeah, I haven't been banded yet (May 13th date....) but I'm trying to change my eating habits now for a smoother transition.

personal I do nmot drink the powder

I am a type 1 and I have had trouble with my kidneys off and on during my life

They say if you get in over 100 g of protien per day it could affect your kidneys

My protien ranges from 60-90

Some days I do hit the 100s but that is not often and I was told if it is not a daily thing than I should be ok.

You hav eto get in 60 g for your body to work properly

It is a hard balence.

I stay away from protien drinks and barsz or whatever else they have unless I am sick I I can not get my protien in by normal food than I may eat a bar that has 20 g

I was banded June 2007 I am down 95lbs

It does help you controll your sugar better to loose teh weight

Good luck

1st things 1st......GOOD FOR YOU! Keep up the good work.

I'm a long term (about 20 years) type II. I'm currently on insulin and metformin. I have been using the protein powder shakes as a supplement to my diet, I'm not banded yet. Waiting on approval of insurance after doing all the jumping through hoops.

Yes, too much protein can damage your kidneys, so be sure to have yourself monitored while you use it. Getting enough protein is important during the time immediately before and after surgery. Protein is what your body uses to build more of you, ie - healing. If you are on a balanced diet and getting adequate protein and other nutrients you probably don't need to take additional protein except as I noted in the immediate pre and post-operative periods. Ask your lapband surgeon, nutritionist, and primary care Dr for recommendations.

Thanks for your responses. You've both given me great information to get off to a good start after surgery. I was SO surprised that Protein could affect the kidneys the way it does. Can you believe I tried the Atkins diet to help with my diabetes...wow, the human body is really amazing.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
