When can I travel by airplane to go home after the surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have a question that I need to resolve as quickly as possible so that I can finalize my plans surrounding my surgery.

My surgery is scheduled for May 7th in Boston, and my family lives in Rochester, NY.

How many days do I have to wait to go back home to Rochester on a plane (only a 1 1/4 hr. flight)?

I'll have someone to take care of me in Boston, but I do want to go back home ASAP after the surgery, so if anyone has an answer, please let me know!

I flew home 2 days after. My flight was a 6 hour one. I did fine. You may need to ask for a seat belt extender on the way home for the plane. You may be bloated from the gas they extend your belly from. I had no other issues except there are really not much options of anything to have on the plane. I brought with me a powder serving of crystal light to mix with Water to drink. You must stay hydrated.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! That's very helpful.

Out of curiosity, other than having to go back for your first fill (I believe approximately 6 weeks after your surgery), did you have to travel back to your surgeon for any other kind of visit?

I am olny 9 days post op. But my fill place is within driving distance thankfully. I dont think I could afford to fly for my fills.

i've never heard of flying restrictions.

i know that you can't drive a car if you're on pain pills.

but if you're not piloting the plane, you're fine.

as long as you stay comfortable, and stay hydrated, i would think 1 1/4 hr flight is no big deal.

as long as you don't try to lift luggage or anything.

good luck.

I think this is a good question for your doctor...I also travel for work and was told by my doctor to allow 3 weeks recovery before air travel to avoid blood clots.

I had my surgery on MOnday in Mexico and flew back to Jacksonville, FL on Wed. My American Airlines flights were cancelled so it took me over 12 hours to get home. I took pain pills as prescribed and did just fine.

So if you get banded in Mexico, do you have to go back there for all your fills? I don't think I could afford...no wait...I KNOW I couldn't afford to back to Mexico every few weeks for the first year!

No you don't go back there for fills...they help you find a fill center near where you live. I live in St. Augustine, FL and found a DR who will take care of me outside of Orlando which is about 1.5 hours away. The experience was fabulous. When we got home, my sister called her doctor here in the states for help with re-adjusting her insulin and they didn't call her back for 36 hours. We called the surgeon in Mexico to ask him a question and he called back in 5 minutes. That certainly speaks volumes to me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
