Self-payer and Income taxes

Banders-Self-payers,

I hope you all know and in case you don't if you kept all your receipts you can claim Lap-Band surgery on your taxes. Ask your tax preparer. I am receiving a little over a 1/3 of what I spent back on my taxes.

Not bad. It is a savings for those that are struggling. I luckily had a loving husband that just retired and received a lumpsum payment, who helped pay for my surgery.

Now my tax money can go towards new cloths or paying off part of the debt I got in over this surgery.

Good luck and keep up all the good work

Just a quick caveat on this...in order to get a tax benefit from this surgery, or any surgery you must file an itemized return and you can only claim the medical expenses that exceed 7% of your adjusted gross income. That said, you can include mileage or airfare to the doc, hotel rooms, etc, so save all associated receipts!. For more info, please see http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf

Another little addendum, I think you can file an amended tax return, if you have your receipts and can deduct the costs.

Glad you said this. I keep seeing where people say it's tax deductible, like the whole thing is automatically a deduction. NOT! Since we drive to Mexico for dental work as well as our fills, we have started to keep track of mileage and other travel-related medical expenses better, though.

See this thread, then account for any TY07 changes. What I posted was accurate, at the time. I haven't even looked at TY07 tax changes tho.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
