I have a complaint!

Recommended Posts

I never saw the reasoning for Diagramming a sentence
every year from about 5th grade on we spent countless hours in school diagramming freaking sentences.
I was the weirdo in English class asking the teacher if we could please

diagram sentences!

WHAT...the...HELL does "diagramming a sentence" mean? Either I was doing it and never knew what it was called, or they outlawed this practice by the time I got to school. LOL

Steph - I had it freshman in high school - 1970 :eek::wub: you take a sentence underline the noun verbs prepositional phrase adjectives etc - i really don't remember but you had to identify the parts of the sentence with the above - i cheated my way thru that part of English:lol::crying::lol:

I am a grammar nut (fav. class in school), but does not mean everyone else has to be.

On the net you take what you get and move on!

I don't let those things annoy me.

We diagramed sentences for about 5 seconds in some grade in elementary school. I guess the practice was already falling out of favor. We would take the sentence and put it into a chart that reminds me of those timelines they do on Without a Trace.

They look like this:

Sentence Diagramming

My kids only circle nouns and verbs or underline other parts -- whatever part they are studying. They don't ever diagram the whole thing.

I probably loved diagramming sentences because it was one of the things I was good at. I had tutors in Algebra and still would have failed it if the teacher hadn't just taken pity on me.

You know, I had the same problem with Algebra. I took it my junior year, failed and had to take it again my senior year. I had to pass it in order to graduate. I really think my algebra teacher had enough of me and my clueless self and gave me a D- just to get me out of there.

That makes me feel better Susan. You are obviously very intelligent.

My teacher gave me plenty of attention and could tell I was really trying. He knew there was no hope of me understanding it though.

It really showed up when I had kids that everyone has their area

where they shine. My daughter really had trouble with Math and

excelled everywhere else. My son went all the way through calculus

but couldn't write a paragraph to save his life.

That was Geometry for me. I could not grasp the concept of these letters and numbers making this graph. WTF??? I scraped by with a D and a lot of pity from the teacher. The kids now use school provided graphic calculators. I thought using a calculator was cheating??

Who are you people? This is supposed to be a support

forum for people involved in weight loss surgery. What is

all of this criticism about paragraphs, run on sentences,

and punctuation? I was not aware of the how discriminating

overweight people can be. I do not want to participate in

a forum where my spelling and punctuation are more important than the content .

Hi, Moiola;

Welcome to the Lap Band Forum!

I SO agree with you about the pickiness of some people here.

However…..there are a couple of things I’d like to mention:

First, where you said “run on sentences”, it really SHOULD be articulated as “run-on” sentences. Also, with regard to our attitude towards writing style, the appropriate word would be “critical”, and not “discriminating”, as you put it.

And finally, your final word, “content”, is followed by a period. You have placed TWO spaces between the word “content” and the period. ONE space would actually be quite sufficient.

Thanks for your observations, and we’ll be looking for your next comment Real Soon Now!

My writing is correct. What is your profession? It is certainly

a big reflection on your lack of education!:tt2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
