Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but just have a few comments to make. I was banded on 1/19/07 and have only lost about 23 lbs since. I have exercised regularly and have already had three fills. I experience ongoing nausea and although I can't tolerate much food, less than 1000 cals. most days, still not losing weight. Has anyone else had similar experiences? My surgeon has briefly discussed the number of lap-band failures at about 15% of patients inhis practice, and about 19-20% for the general population. He may convert to bypass surgery. Just looking for anyone with a similar experience.

Jack, she said 2007, not 2008, so she may be talking about over a year's time.

Are you sure you are measuring your food and not just estimating calories? I know I often lie to myself, and I don't want to doubt your word, but it seems very strange that you are not losing weight on under 1000 calories per day. Do you keep a food diary during the day? As I understand it, not everyone loses weight with a band, but it is usually because they are eating too much by eating around the band with things like ice cream, or not getting fills in a timely manner. Many people swear by exercise but I have to admit I am not one of them. I ride my bike 10 miles most days, but whether I do or not does not seem to affect my weight loss.

You were banded eleven weeks ago and have lost at least two pounds a week. That seems good and normal to me.

If you wanted even more rapid weight loss, then gastric bypass would have been the WLS to choose.

Opps, just caught that too. Do you mean 2007 or Jan 2008?

If you can;t tolerate most foods you might be too tight and many banded people do not lose weight if they are too tight.

I guess we need more info/clarification to offer suggestions/help.

Are you keeping a food diary and carefully measuring / weighing everything you eat to make sure your caloric intake is what you think it is?

If it is accurate, and you have been eating that way for over a year and not losing, you should start talking to your primary care doc about other possibilities. I know Vinesqueen, who was on here back in 2005/2006, also had great difficulty losing despite low cals and exercise. She discovered she had Cushing's. It's rare, but there are other causes of weight issues out there that could prevent you from losing.

what kind of exercise are you doing?

i agree with the others, if you are not logging your food, start logging every bite...

how much do you have to lose? (the more you weigh, the quicker the initial loss is)

I know exactly how you feel, but let me say this you are doing great!!! I have lost 44 lbs. in 32 weeks. I often wonder what I am doing wrong and then realize I am only human. My eating disorder did not go away after being banded. It is a learning process. Some lessons are more difficult than others. You are doing fine stand back and look real hard at yourself. Whan is the last time you lost 23 pounds? Pat yourself on the back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
