not enough? 300 or less a day

Recommended Posts

I am 6 days post op today. I havent had much of an "appeitite", I have Water and a 1/4c vegetable broth, and a 160 cal 35g Protein 1 carb 11oz drink that I take 1hr to drink. I feel a tightness in my belly and lots of shoulder pain. I dont have much energy to so much although I have walked around for the pain some. I was noticing my vision seemed a little fuzzy, this is bothering me to the point of tears. My urine is light colored so I know i am getting enough hydration. I think Ill call my doctor. I know I cant be functioning right with just 200c a day, right?

no you cannot and every clinic is different so I am learning. At my clinic I go to my dietician said 300-500 is probly where we would be starting out. However it sounds like your in the full liquid phase, so usually they are not too worried about caloric intake that much. Just that your getting it into your body. Have you tried, Soups and Jello? Something with a little more density?

Best Wishes

Yesterday I had a watered down creamy potatoe Soup. I was dipping my spoon in and licking it off repeatedly. Then i felt a tightness in my chest which I assume is the new "full feeling". so I stopped. Then it got more painful. The uncomftable feeling lasted for more than 5 hours. I think I ate too much. So now no more of that. Ill stick to broth. I was wondering if the tight feeling maybe because the soup was hot also. Yes I am on full liquids. I also just ended and exteremly heavy period post op. Could this also be causing my fatigue?

How much of the creamy potato Soup did you eat? I was banded on 4/2 and was able to eat about 1/3 cup of the soup. I usually know I am getting full because I will start having pain in my left shoulder. Otherwise I don't have any problems with anything, I do drink the liquids slowly though.

There again was my mistake of not measuring that Soup out, I just licked that spoon from the pot I was heating it up with. Probebly about maybe 10-15 times in a row. The warmth felt good. I certainly know better now. I now put it in a condiment cup like you get in a resturant on sip. I now have shoulder and neck achyiness that wont stop.

the 5 hours of pain sounds a lot like gas pains too. you should not experience a full painful feeling for that long.

300 calories is awfully low! My dr wants me around 800-1000 but i am not able to get that many, I am normally around 500-600. I try to drink 1.5 - 2 Protein Shakes a day to get as many calories from Protein sources as possible and then have about a half cup of thinned cream Soup for a meal. I MIGHT be hungry enough at night or at least have enough room to have a sf pop or something. Other than that Water water water. The lightheaded or eye blurryness could be either from the low cals or dehydration, make sure you get at least 64 oz of water! My surgeon wants me peeing every 2 hours.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
